4 cyl. and good on gas....
Friday, November 09, 2007 6:00 PM
I made a post in Off-Topic about buying a used Police Car, and after looking at my Gas bill for last month i said screw that. I have a v6 Diamante right now, and gas is killing me.

So now that the cop car is out, what are some good BIG 4-DOOR cars, 4 cyl. (a must), im a bigger guy, and i have only ever owned bigger cars (cept for my 97 cav, which was way too small).

I want it to be a 2005 or newer. It will remain stock, so a CD player is a must, tilt, CC (i drive alot), pwr windows, pwr looks. other than that i dont really care, besides i want a Automatic Tranny.,

i was thinking Toyota Matrix or Pontiac Vibe, along with Dodge Caliber....Civic, Jetta.....

what are your opinions?

Accords, Mazda 6 and I think a Camry can be had with a 4 cyl. I don't know how much larger a car you can go before a 6 becomes the base option. Congrats on looking for a new car

remember too much car with too little engine can also be bad for economy

Base model Camry's are 4 cylinder. At least my grandmothers is. It's a Toyota, so you know it's not going to break, and it's not a big car, but it's bigger than a cavalier. In fact, I'm a pizza delivery guy right now (not sure how long that'll last, not long hopefully, still looking for another job :\ ) and if I DO happen to stay with it for a while, I'll probably get an auto 4 Cylinder Camry for deliveries/winter driving.

I'd seriously consider a new Malibu...you can even get a "hybrid" powertrain in it...

i would love a hybrid, but my price limit is $16k after taxes and what not, thats why i said 05 or newer , so a new hybrid is out of the question.

camry was another one of my choices, but its hard to find a 4cyl within that price range and not with alot of miles

G6 4cyl malibu 4cyl but i think the malibu only has the 2.2 so it might be a dog the g6 comes with the 2.4eco.

well my mom has a 2005 mailbu maxx with the 3.5V6 and she dont go on the highway at all she hates driveing on the highway and she gets about 23mpg all day long all city driveing. so you might want to check out a used 3.5V6 in the g6 or malibu it will tell you what it gets for mpg look and see what it says when you test drive it. i think it tells you on the radio display.

The last generation Honda Civics were surprisingly roomy, and very good on gas.

My mom has a malibu with the 3.5 v6. VERY punchy, and she got 38mpg on the highway I'd take the 3.5 over the eco ANY DAY. The eco can't get 38 in a cav, let alone a malibu

Camry 4cyl. Very good on gas. The previous generation Camry was available with a 4cyl in every trim level in Canada. But I'm not sure if that is true in the US also, since over 75% of Camry's purchased in Canada were 4cyl models, and I doubt that is the same in the US.

The vibe/matrix is a great mileage car. Also the saturn vue can be had in that price range. I payed around 18k for a new one in 06 vue and it came with pwr windows, lock, cruise, and a few other goodies. My wife gets close to 30mpg in a mix of city/highway driving. Plus in 06 they did a redesign on it, looks pretty nice.

I'd second the Mazda 6, but I'm a little biased

My dad has the N/A 2.3 and it gets decent gas mileage, but were it really shines is the handling and ride. Real nice car. The Speed6 is a Turbo 4, and doesn't get that great of gas mileage, just FYI.

True story. And sorry to ask but when you say big....do you mean tall or wide? or both?

If your a "wide" type of big a mazda 6 will be way to crampt, and the same can go for the Vibe/Matrix. For larger customers some very good choices have already been mentioned. Really any generation of the recent Malibus are perfect. If you can swing it not being 100% brand new or slightly used. The last few years of the original Ford Taraus from like 2002 and up are a good bigger 4-cyl car.

Amazingly the PT Cruiser is freakishly big on the inside for both wide and tall people. It was designed and engineered for old people so it's meant to be very comfy, and actually does that very well for a small car. I'd seriously take a look at those.

Foreign side, minus the mazda 6, brand new Accords are bigger than they ever were and camry's are always very roomy. But they are also more expensive than the ever were. If your willing to go back a generation or 2 you'll not only get a great reliable, economical, and function packed car...you'll get a great deal too. As well as last gen honda civic sedans. But if your cavy was kinda tight the Civic may only be slightly better....the same can be said about the Caliber, only a moderate increase in driver space will be gained. Another you threw out there, the VW Jetta is actually very sportty minded so the seats are kinda narrow and i think that could be uncomfortable, and feel like your crammed in there.

I say if your topping out at $16.000 as you stated, and want all the bells and whistles (i.e. CD player , tilt, CC, pwr windows, pwr locks, Automatic Tranny, A/C) and need space to be comfortable. your best choices are:
> PT Cruiser Limited (2005 - current)
> Chevy Malibu (2005-2007)
> Nissan Altima (2004-2005)

If you can swing older than 2005 (2002'ish and up) I'd say look at Malibu, Taurus, Accord, Camry and Nissan Altima

well to answer the question on what "big" i am, lol, im tall and wide, (6' 4" and 310lbs)

i checked out a Malibu earlier today, and i must say it was very nice, enough room for me. I liked the styling (it was an 06) and it had everything i wanted, low miles, options i wanted, etc...

i am still going to go try out some more cars when i go to columbus this week, since all they sell around me is basically american cars. nothing wrong with them, just ive always had great luck with imports.....and bad luck with american cars....

butr like i said the Malibu was very nice, and as of right now, it is on the top, then the Vibe/matrix....

i'm 6'2" 220lbs and fit nicely inside my cousins 99 malibu, but i think they are all 6cyl's? maybe not..

my camry is alright for room but i gotta tilt the back of my seat pretty far back to me comfortable.. my aunts eagle vision tsi was perfect for me, lots of leg room/head room... but again it was a 6cyl.. not much in the way of big cars with 4 bangers out there..

I'll cast another vote for the Mazda 6, I'm 160 lbs and find myself sliding from side to side in the leather seat in more aggressive corners, so I'd imagine it'd be plenty accomodating. The Accord, Malibu and Camry are sure fire bets and great cars but they're alot more like your everyday car-plaince, no real zip or sports appeal in my opinion. Depends what your looking for, but you wouldn't be disservicing yourself with the 6.
