2008 MT's Car of the Year: The Contenders
Wednesday, November 07, 2007 9:59 AM
Here are this year's contenders:

Audi A5/S5
Audi TT
Cadillac CTS
Chevrolet Malibu
Chrysler Town & Country
Dodge Avenger
Dodge Grand Caravan
Ford Focus
Ford Taurus
Honda Accord
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Mini Cooper
Mitsubishi Lancer
Scion xB
Scion xD
Subaru Impreza
Volvo C30
Volvo XC70

THE CRITERIA - How the vehicles are judged.

Superiority
Engineering excellence, advancement in design, utilization of resources and safety. Vehicle concept and execution are important, as are use of materials, packaging, dynamics, styling, and fuel consumption.

Significance
How well does the vehicle do the job its maker intended it to do? And how does it impact or change its particular market segment, influence consumer perceptions, and transform product development trends.

Value
How does each vehicle compare against its direct rivals? A vehicle with a low sticker price might not be as good a value as a more expensive vehicle that delivers outstanding performance, quality, and functionality.

What do you think of this year's field? What is your favorite to take home the 2008 award?

Rumors have it is this car from another thread I did.

I would vote A5 but, it's MT, so you know the Accord is going to win.

I really hope the CTS lives up to the hype surrounding it, although I really like what I've seen of the Malibu as well... everything else (except the Audis, but I despise Audis) just seems too blah, fugly, or cookie-cutter/old news.

I honestly can't see how the C-Class won't get it. The all new C-class is an amazing car. Same with the A5/S5...The accord has great engineering this generation, but not as amazing as what the germans are putting out.

There is nothing spectacular on the C-class, besides the fact that is new.

Driving it is ORGASAMMMMMMMMM!!!

Not really, but it has great composer and the ride is great, and fun at the track with the 6-speed manual. But the style is attractive, MUCH BETTER than what BMW offers.

Id love to see the CTS or A5/S5 get the win...... but with how MT judges these things... im doubting it.... Both the CTS and A5/S5 are more expensive then the Accord, and also, are a lot worse on fuel comsumption. So, they will lose the affordibility that appeals to most.

Sadly, I think it'll be the Accord, but who knows..

Remeber though MT did give the award to the Thunderbird SC and i believe the Buick GNX once as well soo they're not above giving a car the award just for bad fuel mileage.

Im going to say that just like most times when MT hands this title to a car, they will swing on Honda's nuts and call it a day........ Unfortunately......

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

I'd go with the revamped Malibu. Most sites I've been on and most automotive shows I've watched have praised the redesign of the Malibu. Even if it doesn't win, for it to be consider top car of the year obviously means something was done right with the car, in my opinion.

although i dont think it will win over all, i really liking the new lancers more and more! i recently found a review that compared the civic, lancer, sonata (or whichever one is in that class), and sentra. ...of course the honda won over all, i think the sentra was next then the lancer. but some of their "cons" were not important to me at all. it was the fastest i believe of the four, just not the "most comfortable ride". but they also had the GTS which has 18's (i dont think i would want the 18's and have to worry about damaging them. so alot of their ride comfort issues would be solved if they didnt have the GTS.

i'll see if i can find it again...
