Well, I bought a BMW 540i with the 4.4L V8 to flip. When I bought it it had blown head gaskets, I got a quote from the shop and they said worst case senario we will put a used engine in it if there is any damage and it would be just shy of 4,000$. That was reasonable, turned out everything inside was fine so they just had to replace the head gaskets. Now keep in mind to do the HGs in these cars the engine has to be removed, understandable. I was charged 43hrs labor and 600 for misc parts/solvents. The bill came to 4,000 even which was the number I said call me if it gets over because I will not spend over that, seems fishy huh?
So my question is, whats a rough estimate on a BMW 540i 4.4L V8 1997-2003 head gasket job. I am going to call the BMW dealership monday but I thought maybe there would be some techs here. Regardless I have lots of room to make money on the car and the payment has been done but whats everyone think.
Thanks
Chris

i got quoted 1300-1500 to do a gasket job on a cavalier 2.2 haha .. sorry i have no idea eaither.. id say get a lower mileage motor
43 hrs labor HAHAHA
sorry buddy but they just reamed you a new one
you should try posting over at
bimmer forums
I'm pretty sure you could get a real figure from there
I think Darkstars (ryan) might be able to answer this question. I know he has knowledge about Porsche and V W's, I'm not too sure about BMW's though. 43 hours of labor is A LOT of labor, lol

I very much doubt you're going to find a BMW tech on here lol... I used to be a Dodge tech, but have no idea how BMW conducts their operations. If the motor has to be pulled to do the gaskets, then I could see MAYBE $3000 ish, but yeah, that seems pretty fishy.

43 hours labor? I don't know how to replace the HG's on a bimmer, but I'm pretty sure I could sit down with a service manual and get it done faster than that. Unless they had 5 guys take a day to manually remove the engine.
y not call the dealer and ask for an estimate on labor for the job??
yeah that would be a good idea to call a dealership, they usually have a book in there shop stating how long it should take and what the average price for something like that should be
43 hours is way to much, i personally think you got overcharged by around $1500-$2000 after parts and everything $4600 is way to much for that job... you could have threw a whole engine in the car for that price
I have access to Service manuals and databases that can give an estimate for it.
I can look it up for you prolly like tomorrow or weds at the latest.

It was 4,000 with everything parts/labor/markup. I am calling the BMW dealership tomorrow and will find out, then paying JG Autowerks a visit. If they dont refund a portion I will have them blacklisted, no dealer will go there. Not happy at all, appreciate the help guys
