2009 Toyota Matrix & Corolla

The new Corolla, the 10th generation of the world’s best-selling compact sedan, stays about the same size, but its appeal could be greater because of an expanded lineup.Sales are expected to start Feb. 11. Prices won’t be announced until close to launch.
The 2009 Corolla will be available in five versions: standard, LE, XLE, S and XRS. A 16-valve, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine will produce 132 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. The engine will feature Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) on both the intake and exhaust camshafts but the top-of-the-line XRS, which gets a 2.4-liter, 158-hp and 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm.
The 2009 Corolla is 2 inches wider than the current model. The new Matrix will be available in three versions: standard, S all-wheel drive and XRS, it kinda reminded me of the Saab 9-2X. The same two engines from the Corolla will be offered in the Matrix.
Toyota gets the Corolla right because of the growing number of stylish small cars coming to the United States. Toyota says it is on track to sell about 390,000 Corollas in the United States this year.

since when did toyota get an engine that puts out more torque then hp??? thats not like them at all!

anyways, not bad looking, but whats with the holes on the back of the bumoer of the corolla? and the front end of the matrix reminds me of a prius... that might be why i dont really like it.

That's HAS to be a typo.
LOL
But yeah, i love them both, the Corrola is much nicer now....even though to me it looks like the current one reskinned. And the Matrix is very cool looking, those funky tiny windows on the back are cool.

car kinda looks like an upscale yaris lol.... the interior is really nice though.

the 2.4 engine has always had slightly more tq then hp its been out for years too..
its the same engine thats in my tC... great engine for boost, the corolla fans have been finally blessed after years of these tiny 1.8L engines lol

Looks good. I will definately consider that in a few years when it's time for a new car. Especially the Corolla XRS 2.4 5spd. Although I wish they were still using the high revving 1.8 like in the old XRS.

It's also good that you can finally get a Corolla with options. Like leather seats in the XRS and ABS on base models.

Yay, another bland and nondescript Japa-rean economy car flooding the market with it's boring styling and driving dynamics!

I was wanting a Matrix when I went car shopping but there wasnt one for sale within a reasonable driving distance.

So I ended up with my Civic.

I absolutely love the interiors on both, but the rest of the car may as well be in the dumpster out back...garbage.

So no V6. That would have been cool. I'm dissappointed in the XRS. That is basically a 4 door Tc now. I was expecting to put ot something tuner-ish.

The 4GR-FSE would have been perfect in FWD form: 204hp 258 lb-ft 2.5L V6 direct injection. Would have made an awsome tuner car or upscale grocery getter. Oh well, I'm going back to the early 90's when Toyota made exciting cars. Mr2 turbo here I come.

I kinda like the matrix actually... the corolla... nahsomuch... But I'm guessing that 2.4 motor is the same one thats in the TC that can handle 300+ boosted hp on a stock block so that makes the matrix a little more appealing than it used to be

... the corolla looks somewhat civil compared to the civic (especially the interior).
It definitely shows Toyota's intent... make it inoffensive so you can sell buttloads.

the matrix... well... I'm undecided if it will grow on me if I look at it longer, or if it will
make me go blind. IMO... it's just too round and plump... like it has a hard time
staying off the carbs.
