I think I am in love! (08 CTS)
Thursday, October 11, 2007 5:45 PM
So, I have always said that I would never, ever buy a brand new vehicle because I can't stand how fast they deprecate. Well, I am thinking about it now...

My boss just bought the first 08 CTS in my town, and had it work today. I must say it is @!#$ glorious. So I took a swing buy the local Cadillac dealer to have a look, ended up taking one for a drive, and I loved it. So I talked some numbers.

Basically, the one I wanted, they were asking $58,000 for, but after going the Cadillac Canada's website, we built the same car for a suggested $56,000 as follows,

2008 Cadillac CTS 3.6L w/1SB $45,725
1SB Package $0

Models & Packages Change
Exterior: Black Raven $0
Interior: Ebony w/Ebony Accents w/Leather Seating Surfaces $0
Seats: Front Heated Reclining Buckets Seats Incl.
Wheels: 17" x 8" Painted Aluminum Incl.

Selected Options Change
Engine: 3.6L V6 VVT SIDI Incl.
Transmission: 6-Speed Automatic $0
Tires: P235/55R17 H-Rated AS BW Incl.
Radio: AM/FM Stereo w/CD/DVD Navigation/XM $3,900
XM Satellite Radio Incl.
Sappelle Pommele Wood Trim $465
Comfort & Convenience Package $2,735
Heated & Ventilated Front Seats Incl.
Split-Folding Rear Seat Incl.
Power Rake Steering Wheel Incl.
Universal Home Remote Incl.
Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist Incl.
EZ Key Passive Entry System Incl.
Remote Vehicle Start Incl.
Engine Block Heater $130
UltraView Double Sized Power Sunroof $1,660

Option Total $8,890
Destination $1,420
Total $56,035

So they agreed on that price for me. After trading in the Sierra for $17,500, to total drops to $38,500 + tax = $43,890 out the door.

It is a lot of money, but I really, really want this car. What do you think? Does the "you only live once" line apply here? Or should I just wait a could years and buy the same thing for half the price? I mean, I do like the Sierra, but it has nothing on this CTS, not even 4wd, as the caddy has that too.

I am going back tomorrow for sure for another test drive.

I think I better take the GF too, because, well frankly. I haven't told her anything about this yet.

lol that's rich. why even bother asking us before you consulted the judge jury and executioner yet.

Personally, I think that's allot of loot for a car. How's your job security? mortgage or plans for one in the future? kids? I mean, if you're settled and you can afford one than by all means do it... otherwise I'd wait a bit. It's an american car afterall, and it won't retain it's value; I bet you could pic up a great deal on a demo near the end of 08.

Nice car....lots O money.

I'd wait until the incentives kick in.

GM incentives rarely apply to the Caddy line up.

However, GM depreciation does.

Wait a year or two, and then buy it from the states. Saving 20k FTW.

Just an example....at one time the V had a "cash back" deal that brought it down from 75 to 54.

If the car sells well, no deals/incentives. If it sits on the lots, there are deals to be had.

Buying a used car would certainly be the smartest choice.

That's my question right now. Do I want to be the guy who buys a $50,000 car now, that is worth $25,000 in two years? Or just wait a couple years and be the guy who buys the car someone paid $50,000 to get, for $25,000?

The amount of money to be spent is not a problem, getting over my inner cheapness is.

My GF's friend once asked her "Is Joe cheap, or just careful with money?" To which she laughed and replied, "Joe's so cheap he wouldn't pay a dollar to see Niagara Falls go backwards?"

So there is a chance, I may be a little cheap.

I still do love this car, and don't really want to wait though.

We'll see how the second test drive goes today with GF there too.

I like new cars because I have a phobia.

I know every used car out there was driven by a Taco Bell addict. I like sitting in my own "Heat". Just not others.

The new CTS is a looker for sure. I'd jump on a 2 door in a second. Too bad it doesn't exist.

I lol at that.
Seriously there are some good advice here.
But if you MUST, go for DI, 6-speed manual, with the Level 3 sport suspension. Trust me you can feel the difference on all three and 3 was the most composed.
Weren't you the one that didn't like RWD? You do know this car is. Luckly there is a AWD option on any engine or trim level.

It's not that I don't like RWD, I just can't have it. My drive way is way too bad in the winter. It is 4wd or nothing. The GTP can't do it in the winter even with good winter tires on it until I clear the whole thing with the tractor. Even then, the GF usually gets me to drive it up, as she has ditched it a couple times.

I don't really want to go back to a manual tranny again, I don't think. Auto is so much simpler.

Thanks for the pics, that's the gem right there. Except, I want black on black, with the wood trim though.

A used V can be had for a great price. Many have suggested that a Chevy motor in a Caddy is lame. I beg to differ. At least you know it's strong!

Black on black is THE colour for this car!

Me too Im in love with them! especailly in candy red color! goddamn!

If you wait 2 years or 1... you will pay the car off faster than if you buy it now in 2008.

This is a bad debt... you could use those 10 - 25k into something else good or even greater.

Time is money! Patience is a virtue!

The car will be paid for in full when I drive it off the lot. So how long I pay for it is not the issue. How much I pay is.

I can't get a CTS-V at all because they don't have one in the 08 model year (at least not on Cadillac's site) and all previous CTS-V's just like all previous CTS's are RWD. Therefor, useless to me, for the reasons I posted earlier.

The GF and I looked and drove one again today, and she really liked it, but she said she doesn't want me buying anything until we decide what we are doing with the house. She said if we sell the house, I can buy whatever I want. I know she is only saying that because she wants the buy a Mercedes if we sell the house, haha. But, if we don't sell, she would rather me keep the Sierra and GTP.

So ya, I guess that I have some thinking to do. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys. Keep them up.

direct injection is the way to go, and i was seriously hell bent on getting the new one ( the interior is friggin gorgeous)

but the way i see it, i can have a used ctsv, a vette, or a sts with a sport suspention for the same price.....

my car stickered for almost 50k, i paid 25 with a warr that covers it up to 86k miles... but there are a few things that the previous owner did that bug me (burn hole, scratches etc..) but they still don't = 20k to fix...

but then again i looooove that car so...

the real question is, i it worth it to YOU?

id say lease it on a short term, then decide where you want to go after that (option to buy is nice)

ok so now you're thinking of selling your home in favor of a car?
Please tell me I misread your comments.

Not exactly.

See, the GF and I borrow $x.xx to build our house. We have paid the majority of it off, and should have the rest paid off in the next 2-3 years.

Just for curiosity, we had our house and property appraised, and well it was valued on the current market at almost 4 times what we have into it, so we have been thinking about selling, and buying a house in town. We could sell now, and buy a house for about what we borrowed to build this, and make a lot of money. But the choice is not easy, I just don't want to live in town, or see yet another piece of my family's property go to another rich person from Toronto.

I am NOT going to sell my house to buy a car, but I may buy a car if I sell my house.

...well that makes more sense, and cashing-in on the current housing market also makes sense (provided you invest your profits wisely). Selling a home in a hot market is truly a catch 22 situation. Sure you can rake-in allot of loot, but you'll also have to pay a premium on your new place (with limited selection). Buying a brand new caddy will only compound a poor investment decision..

Personally, I think you should research the housing market now, and put off the caddy until you settle your estate situation. You should start looking for properties: i) that will leave you with money in the bank ii) that will appreciate or you can flip for a profit iii) you can live-in comfortably (since you mentioned your gripes about living in town).

Bottom line. Sure the new caddies look sweet, but imagine how much sweeter it will be to own one if you don't bum up your investments.
