Powertrain details remain under wraps. Rumors have the STi having a new horizontally-opposed 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo charged engine that was developed exclusively for the new WRX STI and is to make the jump to at least 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque for this iteration, as the current car already makes 293 horsepower and 290 pound-feet. Subaru's 2009 Impreza WRX STI with more concrete detail is promised later this month when the car makes it's world debut at the Tokyo auto show on October 24.

It's a 2.0 because rally rules specify that engines can't be larger than that. As for it's looks, it's a hideous car. What's worse is that it's a 5 door hatchback, the absolute ugliest/lamest configuration for a car ever. Makes you look like you're a father of 5 that's too poor to buy a minivan.

I think the Mitsubishi Evo will see it's sales go up.

This release has been titled "JDM release" everywhere else I've seen it, so there is a good chance it will still be a 2.5 liter here.

I bet this car grows on people pretty quick. I know I hated the new WRX hatch until I saw one in person in red. This new STI looks pretty good in silver in those pics above. Getting rid of the taillights and grabbing some black wheels might help.

Ugly or not, that thing is still 10 times the car that graces most driveways....

I have never really liked the subi ever since the veered away from that bodystyle they had when they first came to the states. I actually really like the boxy 2door.

I have been itching to play with a light weight awd vehicle. I hate the dsm, I hate any subie exept what I just mentioned, and I loved the evo when they first came over. and now I hate the evo becouse ofwhat the 'tuner' scene has done to it and the stigma they have collected becouse of 90% of thier owners.

I think I will just sit back and see what comes out in the next few years. I got enough on my hands now to keep me biusy. I may eventually pick up an older subi if I have to. I know they are slower but I would be planning on modding anyways so I might as well get what I want

I personally love the new Impreza hatch and sedan, and will probably buy one. The STi is too done up for me, but I still like it.

But I also think the Subaru took a big chance changing the car so much, it may pay off, it may not.

I they hit a homerun on this one. Those of you who disagree, get used to it and welcome to the year 2009 you're probably going to have a bad stay here.

They hit a homerun and hit the designer in the head. If they had an option for a sedan and not the 5-door then it'd look good. Right now it just looks like a Mazda with a hood scoop
