Wow . . . That was hardcore. So there I was playing Rambo on my NES emulator when at about 11:30pm, you hear what sounds like a bomb going off right outside my house. I instantly snag my phone to run out there and report the accident. I find an Eclipse Spyder laying on its roof, and a small pickup truck with its hazards on with glass ALL over the street. Luckily a Cook County Sheriff was going down Ridgeland right after it happend so as soon as I got out there, he threw on his lights to come up. The driver of the pickup truck was dazed and really out of it and was just as lost on how this happend. There was one girl in the Eclipse who was alive and concious, she was talking to the cop as he kept her talking until the EMT's arrived. She wanted to get up but the cop didn't want her moving at all. I was right there with the cop as he was keeping her awake. She was worried about her condition, and then she started crying more and worrying about her car. Of course we just kept her talking until the EMT's arrived 15 MINUTES LATER! I swear, I could've made a pizza quicker. They got her up on the stretcher and took her away ASAP and then came the task of how to tow the Eclipse. They ended up putting the guys truck on a flat bed, and used a standard tow truck to flip over the Eclipse (was cool watching), and towed it away. From a witness driving northbound, she said the Eclipse wasn't speeding at all. She said the truck tried making a left turn, and the Eclipse hit its brakes and tried to swerve around the truck, but ended up clipping it almost in a PIT maneuver which SOMEHOW flipped the car over on its driver-side fender first. Whatever happend, the Eclipse ran the stop sign onto a main street (40mph limit, average is usually about 50-55mph) and created this havoc.
Anyways, on with the pics. They aren't the greatest in the world, but they work and you get the idea. For a convertible, I think it took it pretty well. The fender was gone, bumper smashed up along with all the windows, but the top wasn't really 100% caved in (surprised me).
I'm sure it'll be on the news seeing that a news crew was here, and I'm sure an investigation will be coming to find out how the hell this car managed to flip over if it wasn't speeding.
Kinda glad I dont have a vert anymore, the windshields just collapse. Sounds like everyone is ok, thats good.
Wonder how well t-tops hold up...
How many steps to heaven, Doc?
...Ah, metaphysics.
Being I am a tow truck driver you see a lot of weird things and you always wonder "how it the hell did they do that?" That one don't look too bad. The ones that go off mountains and 100+ feet down are the challenging ones. Atleast everyone is ok from the sounds of it.
The strange thing is that like the witness said, she wasn't speeding, and you didn't hear any squealing of brakes or anything. It just sounded like someone shot off a .44. Just a loud *SLAM*, and that was it. As you can see in the last pic, that was the truck that she hit and there is barely any damage to it. There is an impact on the passenger side door, and the rear passenger is smashed in a tad, but that was it. Yet the Eclipse's driver side fender was gone, bumper smashed to all hell, passenger side door was broken to all hell, no windows, rolled over, etc. Just figuring out how she hit the truck makes you say...
We all gotta love Worth though . . . They left the scene with a MASSIVE amount of glass in the street. All on the corner and before, etc. Just drove away with it like that. We have a great township here . . . *sigh*
And THAT is why Im trying to find a roll bar for my vert!
Chirst man! Talk about some carnage. Last Oct when I t-boned a Silverado with my Saturn (dumbass 18yo kid rolled thru the stop sign, and I had no stop @ 55MPH), the Silverado had hardly any damage and my Satty had basically no front end left. Wish I woulda had my cam for pics
Good to hear that the girl lived and was conscious.
^That's called "crumple zone." Every car today carries that.
You wind up hitting a very strong structure in which it is not supose to crumple at all, hence almost no side damage.
Also by law, the A-pillar on a vert is supose to carry 1.5-2.0 times the weight of the car. Some cars like Saab, Volvo their A-pillars will hold 3-4 times the weight of the car.

X2 working at a salvage auction i see totaled cars every day, and wonder how the hell did he do that? too.
every Eclipse we get is always totally mangled, a lot of them are so bad we don't even know it's an Eclipse until we check the VIN.
