Though on Fox Body Stang

I've been looking at cars since I got rid of the camaro and been in Korea. Now its just a few more months until I can actually purchase one. Its getting closer and closer =P Well i've been wanting to get an LS1 camaro.

I started looking at the Fox body mustangs. I've never wanted a mustang but I always said thats the only one i'd ever own would be a fox body. This isn't the exact one but just like this one. Correct color and all. If I didn't have to go back to Korea for a few months I'd probably buy it now, lol.

So my question is what are your thoughts on the 5.0 Fox mustangs. I know it won't be as fast as an LS1 camaro. How do they handle? Anyone have any expieriences with them? Good or bad either or.....

I own one I love it to death. The handling isn't all that great but it looks like you owned a 80s camaro so its going to be similar.
check out foxbodyforum.com they have some great information there :p.
the car can be mad quick for fairly cheap.. i'm talking 12s in under 2k. I love the car to death and they still can be bought for fairly cheap

Thanks guys, I've always loved those foxy body mustangs. Project crash, i'm assuming its your daily driver. Any reliability issues? How is it on the daily drive? I'm in FL and will be here for a few years so the winters wont be too harsh. I always have my wifes car if all else fails. I know they can be had cheap but I dont want to buy one and then put money into fixing it up. I'd rather spend the money making it faster. So even though its around 8-10k they look almost new. That black one is major sweet. I'm tempted to buy one of those and garage it, haha. But i'll hold off for another few months. I can't wait.

Project Crash, I got another question for you. You said the handeling isn't that great. How bad would you say it is? I know they use to use them as Highway Patrol chase cars but quit because at high speeds they weren't too great. I believe a cop rolled one end over end a few times in a high speed chase and shortly after they quit using them in CA.

Thanks for the inputs. I'd kind of like to hear what someone who doesn't like them has to say. It probably wont change my opinion on them but its good to hear an un-bias opinion as to why I should not get one. I'll look for the link I had. The one i wanted sold in about 5 hours. It was built for a magazine with an LS1 in it. Only made 3 passes. Best time of 10.4 and they said it had much more in it. Needed some slicks and a cooler day and 9's were easily had. Car sold for 10.5k =/ I would have snatched that up in a heart beat.

I heard they could be made fast for cheap.

My wife says the same thing. I've thought about doing a twin turbo Iroc. I just dont know how much money I have to put into a car.

I have a love/hate relationship with foxbodies. I love how easy they are to work on, and how readily parts are available. However, I absolutely hate how the majority of them (due to the styling, size, etc) basically look like glorified Escorts!!!

From what I've experienced, the handling will be a bit better than the Camaro was, but only marginally.

The winning factor, however, is like I said: parts are readily available. The foxbody is one of the most widely wrenched car of its era, so you'll have plenty to choose from.

I say get one!!

i dont think it would be too hard to stiffen the suspension up in a fox
my mustang isnt that bad handling, so i imagine foxes handle better
just get some anti sway bars, strut bars, and maybe some springs/struts, and that thing will handle real nice (not like a vette or anything like that, but still pretty good)

Thanks guys, I was just a little un-easy buying a ford. Yet alone a mustang. I've always been such a die hard chevy fan and so anti-ford. Specially the mustang. I always said though the only mustang I would own besides the obvious Shelby GT500 would be a fox body.

As much as I don't like Mustangs I'd rock that bodystyle. I've driven a stock one and a decently modded one and they both were pretty fun.

Seriously?
Altezzas on a Mustang? That guy should be shot for have such a nice fox body and then ruining it with those lights. Actually the taillights of choice for GT's are the regular lights from the LX. I never could like those louvered stock GT lights.

What's nice about the Fox body is that they're literally Ford's version of the 55-57 Chevy or 67-69 Camaro. An instantly recognizable car that can be modded in every flavor imaginable. Stock, they pretty much ARE glorified Escorts, but there's so much possibility in those cars. Another plus is the low weight. Even the GT isn't much more than 3100lbs. A coupe is only 2800lbs.

As for the handling, it's not that great. However it can easily be improved. You can even put in an independent rear suspension so there's tons of potential there. The big plus in my book is the low weight. Just about anything can be done with a light car.

handling isn't horrible but my other car is an audi so going from that to the mustang its not that great. the car currently has 91k miles on it and the only problem i've ever had with it was a blown tranny which was completely my fault it was automatic too they tend to be a bit weaker but the car overall is very solid.

The point of buying a 5.0 is cheap thrills. 8k isn't cheap thrills. Lots of ls1's or 99-00 gt's for that money....

I'd rather buy a cheap fox body and put a brand new stroker motor in it than have some high dollar low mileage stocker. I'd opt for an lx notch just to be a little different.

to the people who are saying a fox body will out handle a 3rd gen camaro are nuts! the handling of the fox bodies is terrible, they are only good for goin in a straight line unless you do sum suspension work. the 3rd gens are quite a bit wider and can fit a much larger tre without modification. if the third gens werent such heavy tanks they would blow the mustangs out of the water in all aspects.

The only thought I've ever had on a Foxbody 'stang was: "damn that's gonna be a naaaaaasty fart..."

Oh no wait.. I had another one: "I wonder how much rust this one will shed when I sit down?"

I'm a bastard, I know it.

Get the Merc version and save another 200 lbs or so.. They were faster out of the box than the stang... For some reason I cannot remember the name and I'm not a Ford fan so I'm not looking it up, you can.. Not Caprice,,, Damn,,, It was the same car with less body cladding etc, therefore lighter and faster with all the same mnechanicals etc.. If you look you will find it.

Personally I never liked them, but I'm biased. When they were popular I had my 68RS and was quite happily spanking them all over the place. Traction seems to be there biggest drawback and that can be fixed fairly easily.

Its the Merc Capree and they are ugly as @!#$.

The point of getting the Fox body mustang was not to be faster. If I was doing that then yes I'd get a notchback or an LS1. They are faster out of the box. The point was I wanted a really clean little bit car easy to mod. I love the way the look. I like the LS1 better but I love the body style of these a lot more.

But the capree has exactly the same metal componants, the only difference is a louvre in the back and some body cladding.. How can you love one and hate the other? Persoannly I hate them both, but that makes sense to me

The front end on them is way different. Thats like saying the Sunfire and the Cavalier are the same. Sure they are....but...they aren't. You can love a cavalier and hate a sunfire. Or vice versa. Makes complete sense.

Funny that you say the 3rd gens are tanks when they are the lightest of all of the F-body generations. Read up a little bit before you start talking @!#$..

Just because its the lightest of the F-bod doesn't mean its not heavy. Its a heavy car period. Just about any other car with a 250+ hp 300ft lb trq would be pretty sweet. Thats about what a third gen 350 is at and i'm sorry but stock they are not fast.....at all. Cool cars fun to drive what ever but not fast in stock form.
