Got some plans in the works :D
Wednesday, May 30, 2007 1:48 PM
Looking into getting an 87 pontiac Fiero GT, guy i know is selling it for $1200. Motors pretty well shot, but the body is pretty nice, no rust just minor dings. Im looking into doing a 3800 s/c swap that should be fun. My friends dad owns a body shop so body work+paint is gunna be cheap. I think it'd make for a relatively cheap project car that should be fun Another route i heard is fun is a 350 v8 Some great bodykits at www.v8archie.com, should i want to change the look Thoughts?

i love V8's just as much as the next guy... but 3800 s/c's run 12's in those in mostly stock form. they wiegh less, make more power with less evasive sergery, and c'mon, it's supercharged! want a V8, get an f-body. in this case, 3800 FTW

How so??

Budget - $11,000ish
----------------
Body - $1200
Insurance - quoted at $700/year

idk how much the rest is gunna run me just yet but aside from those 2 things i have $9100 left. Bodywork i can get done cheap from my friends dad, My uncle is a mechanic and can help with the engine swap.

Im not sure what is so "far fetched" about this, please elaborate on your statement there.

good luck getting a 11k$ loan from a bank and letting them know your going to pour it into a 20 year old car which after which will have absolutely no chance of getting your money out of it and also cannot put full coverage on meaning if it gets destroyed in a wreck your out on your ass with a loan to pay for anyways.

ya, theyll go for that. in a heartbeat.

I'd imagine you could build a pretty nice 3800sc fiero for about 5 grand, including the price of the car. Fiero's are dirt cheap, and 3800sc's are about a grand.

If I had 11k to spend on building a car I wouldn't even bother with a fiero though...

I always wanted a 3.0/3.2L Taurus SHO motor in a later model GT, but I don't think I would enjoy having to work on a motor located where it is in those cars...so it will never happen in my garage.

maybe it's just because i spend a lot of time in a 3800 community, but i've seen a bunch of these things. they're awesome, i'd love to have one. they're good lookin cars, and can be damn quick for little money.

and damn, where'd borsty come from? i havent seen you post in forever. maybe it's just because i only troll around the other cars forum, but i musta missed somethin.
and unfortunetly, borsty's right. unless it's a personal loan, no way a bank's gonna give you that much money for a 20 year old car. no matter what your plans.

Its a line of credit, not a "car loan", and i never said i was gunna spend all $11k on it, im saying if i need it for w/e reason i have the $$. I wouldn't dump $11k into a 20 year old car.

Lol like i said im not spending the full $11,000 on a fiero lol Its kinda like buffer room, incase unexpected costs come up, i have the cash. I found a 86 gt with the swap done, being sold for $6k, imma try to talk him down and we'll see how that goes. If it doesn't ill do it myself.

Um.. k, thanks for the input Helpful post. Sooo, people dumping a crapload of cash into cavaliers is ok, but this is "retarded"?? Ya, that makes sense. Fixing one up for around $7000 complete, whereas a good majority of cavaliers are more than that stock? What about people fixing up first gen cavaliers?? Given the fiero is a fairly old car but remember, its my money, wtf do you care?

I'm pretty sure those are his thoughts, so you asked for it.

Spending that kinda money on a fiero is retarded, likewise, spending that much on a J is. Some people forget that there are those on this site, that wouldn't run out and by a body kit, turbo, and air bag kit for an econobox.

I'm sorry. I don't speak gibberish. Review what you write before you post!

true i did ask for it, but calling it Retarded isn't exactly called for. What people do with there money is their buisness, people have different tastes in vehicles, alot of things people do to cars are "wastes of money" but if they like it, who cares?

i dont care if you spend the money on the car, but to get a loan to build a car like that when you will NOT see a return on your investment is retarded
I never took out any loans when my dad and i built the mustang, and that is actually something we may get our money back on if i were to sell it (which i never will)

Mmm i dont see this happening, sure it'd be fun but the kbb for a 87 GT with moderate KM's is like $1500 lol, good luck getting your money back out of it. Get a f-body and be done with it lol

Your first mod on your mind mind should be and if only this mod is....the brakes, the ones on stock fiero's are crap, I don't even think they're vented, just solid rotors. Prone to excessive fade and even cracking expecially if you put a bigger engine.

I would be interested to see a quad/ twin cam or ecotec in a Fiero. they would be lighter than any v-6 or v-8, plus, those 4-bangers can take lots of boost and keep on truckin' (so long as you do it the right way, not just slap 20psi of boost on a stock engine!)
or, if you have up to $11K available, why not the new 3.5L HF V-6 w/ 6-speed manual out of a pontiac G6? the HF engine is DOHC (I think w/ VVT), rather than pushrod, and I'm pretty sure it puts out at least as much power as the 3800 s/c, comparing stock to stock, and the HF is naturally aspirated- the virtues of a much more efficient head than any pushrod will ever have. Plus, the 6spd tranny is designed for it (though I think it bolts right up to the 3800 s/c also if you really want that engine).
mid-engine, rwd, 2-seater w/ a v-6 and a 6-spd? BEAUTIFUL!

in regards to this, grow up, man. you're way's not the only way (just like mine isn't either.), though i agree it's not usually a good idea to go into debt unnecessarily.

Geeze, bout time someone actually says something constructive lol Thanks. Like i was trying to say, im not spending all $11,000 on it obviously, its buffer room for repairs and such. Anything leftover is going back into the loan to pay it off, then the $$ from the cavalier is going into it too, to further pay it off. I dont understand why everything thinks its such a "retarded" idea, ive seen some weird ideas on here before. Like the old saying goes "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothin at all" Just calling it "retarded" is not constructive no matter how you look at it. I need to check out the bank on monday and see if im approved for the loan before anything is written in concrete. Night night
