My dad has a LONG drive to work every day and needs a car with really really good MPG, looks arn't important. Needs to be reliable too, for not TOO much, thinking round $3-5000ish. I was thinking a civic hx possibly, what year im not sure though. Or perhaps a VW rabbit/jetta?
How about a cav? I'm looking for the exact same thing...ill be driving 1000+ a week.
03 cav under 15000 miles.....30+mpg
I have a 2.4l Grand AM as well that consistently gets 33mpg or so...if I didnt run the miles up on it i would just keep that...
Ford Festiva or Geo Metro ESI, the Geo metro ESI if you can find one gets close to 60 MPG

Ford Festiva, my bestfriend has one of those, and they are so ugly, but he gets awesome mpg from it.

an older civic or 3rd gen cav would fit your criteria. used VWs will get costly from the maintenance side

It's just too bad you don't live someplace warmer than Canada
because I would recommend a Rickshaw. They come in:
01) manual
02) triptronic
03) and automatic

my wife's 98 corolla gets 34-37 mpg highway. about 32mpg mixed (with 122,200 miles). you can pick up that range of corolla for around 3-4 grand.
GO PATS!!!
