GTP 3.4" pulley and PCM CONFUSION!!!!!
Sunday, April 22, 2007 8:18 PM
Ive been trying to search all forums for the gtp and came out more confused. I just bought a new blower but it has the 3.4 pulley on it. My mods done to the car are ngk plugs, 3 inch downpipe, u bend delete, slp intake, msd coil packs and msd wires. My question is do i need that aftermarket pcm zzperformance and pfyc sells to run this pulley? Or is the pcm a further mod to get more power? Does the stock pcm compensate more fuel for the added air? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

The stock PCM, while not the most efficient, will work fine with the pulley. You have the requisite mods to use it, namely the DP w/ U-Bend delete & Intake. I would certainly recommend getting a DHP PCM though.

it is best to tune the pcm , even with a stock pulley

keep a eye on knock

A former coworker of mine was running the 3.4" pulley with the same mods. It runs, but Im not sure of all that great. It wasnt much faster than my brothers 04 Impala SS, which is stock execpt for a WAI which we only put on to hear the supercharger better.

Id recommend the PCM or a tune, I assume the PCM is pulling timing on my buddy's GTP, because its not much stronger than it was stock, It was faster with the mods you have. However there might be something Im missing.

confusious say "GTP with knock is knocking on heavens door"

better to replace the PCM with the upgraded fueling and timing tables then leave it stock. you can run it, but the possibility of it grenading itself is higher than with an aftermarket PCM. if you do get one, get the ZZP PCM, or the Digital HorsePower Powertuner. lets you do all of the tuning yourself, and it also carries the base DHP flash. your mod list is ok for the 3.4 in some cases, but every car is different. you've got the ability to move the air in and out, you just need to make sure the fueling is going along with the increase in flow.

Andy

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

So when i buy the pcm is it just a plug and play thing or does it have to be dyno tuned?

no dyno tuning. depending on the year of car, there are two things that will need to be done. if it's a '97, there's a small chip inside the PCM which just needs to be transfered from the old one to the new one. '98 and newer GTP's will need what's called a "case learn". a simple little thing that any dealership can do. however, when going to the dealership to do a case learn with an anftermarket PCM, tell them to NOT reflash the PCM, doing so will whipe out all of the tune that you just spent your hard earned money on.

I didn't do a case learn at first with mine, then did one... IMHO, not worth the bother unless you're having issues.

I have 2 more questions.....I just picked up supercharger oil and i was wondering if 2 bottles fill it or does it require more? My last question is how can you tell if the coupler has wear and is no good? i haven't pulled it apart yet but when i do i would like 2 know what im looking for. Thanks again

paul, the case learn is a safety if it's not needed. it's better to do it then to put it off. i think it's around $30 at most to get one done.

low, 2 bottles fills the blower up. to see if the coupler is bad, pull the S/C belt off, and move the pulley from side to side (clockwise, counter clockwise motion) and feel if there's play in the pulley. play means the coupler is bad.

ryan, how much are the PCM's there. because odds are they wont know how to tune GTP's, and the ones through ZZP are around $100
