mazda6 or ford escape?

Hey all what are your thoughts on this? My girlfriend is looking to trade her 02 Focus LX in on either a 03 Ford Escape XLT 3.0V6 AWD that has 36K on the clock. Looks nice and clean. Or she is looking for a Mazda6 hatch with the GFX and V6 but has to be auto as she will not learn how to drive a stick. So we have only found the Escape. I would preffer her to get the 6 since she drives 45 min 1 way to work everyday.

I would first figure out if she needs a car or an suv. That's like trying to compare oranges to apples. But if I had to choose, I highly dislike the Escape, it comes off as cheaply made. That and I hate Ford........

She doesn't need the SUV, We dont have horrible enough weather to make it imposible to get around. Last snow and ice storm we had there were a bunch of SUV's spun out and in dtiches as my cavalier did just fine going through and being lowered. So I think that the car would be better but I'm just trying to get some idea's. I know it's comparing 2 totally different vehicles altogether but just trying to gauge opinions.

Get the 6. If weather isn't a concern, and she doesn't haul stuff, then there should be no question.

Only buy the Escape if it's brand new, read: full warranty. I've seen two separate occasions where Escape steering racks have failed prior to 60K.

Personally, I would go with the Mazda as well. Just seems like an all around better car, both in looks, and gas milage, and all that good stuff. Co-worker of mine just got a 2007 Mazda 6 2.3L, not too bad of a car. Another buddy of mine grabbed himself a MazdaSpeed 6, and that thing is an animal!!

If she HAS to have the added space for an SUV, look for a slightly older blazer, or even a different small SUV. Ford just has seemed to gone to hell in the past 5-7 years or so.

My parents have a Ford Escape, 01. Only issue with it so far was a broken TB on the cruise cable, replaced under warrenty. Otherwise, it drives great, good power, the room comes in handy plenty, and has gotten 24 MPG on long highway cruises.

I do love the 6 too. I'd say Escape, because you don't always need the room or the 4WD, but the couple of times you do it makes you very glad you had it.

O noes!

I would go with the Mazda 6. They have breaking points on the front and the back so it is easily crushable with keeping the driver safe and away from harm. Also, the hatchback does have alot of room it it, and you barley can even tell its a hatchback

Don't need an SUV, DON'T GET AN SUV.

The spun out SUV's you're talking aboot probably belonged to people that either:
a: Used it as a poor substitute for a Mini-van.
b: Didn't realize that higher truck=higher center of gravity.
c: Didn't know that SUV's are RWD normally until you kick in the front Differential.
d: Didn't buy the optional with EVERY SUV: Invincibility cloak.

Either way... Go with the Mazda 6, get a set of good All-season radials, or snow tires if it gets that bad, and slow the hell down when the white stuff flies.

The mazda 6 does just fine in the snow (like any other FWD car). And the hatchback actually does offer a lot of storage room. I would definitely go with the 6 hatch.... though I might be a little biased.

I have always liked the mazda 6 personally. She's not sure what she wants to do right now. I am trying to get her to hold off for a lil while if she is wanting to look for a house. There is no way that between a bigger car payment and a mortgage and utilities we can swing all of that. Right now she pays $170 a month on a car payment for the focus and I pay $142 on the cavalier so it's a lil more affordable. Her focus only has 53,xxx on it so it's not like it's going to start falling apart anytime soon. Seems to be holding together alot better than my cavalier is.

I say keep what you got for now. If neither car is in dire need of being replaced, why bump up to a higher car payment for a vehicle that may be unnecessary, especially if you two are planning on getting a house.

Some things are more important than getting a newer car...just my opinion.

The Escape is FWD until the 4WD kicks in. It definitely doesn't handle like a truck. And "need?" How many people that own a Vette "need" one?

I believe the Escape and 6 share the same 3.0 engine, minus some changes. And Ford and Mazda developed the Escape/Tribute/Mariner together.

Don't knock it 'till you try one!

Oh yea, how about the best of both worlds, the AWD Fusion?

O noes!

upgrade when you need to, keep the focus for another year or two

Yeah, but how many of those people use the Vette as their ONLY mode of transportation, especially as a daily commuter 45 mintues one way? I'd guess probably pretty close to none.

This is a good point. As much as I'd love to get rid of my Elantra and get something that's a little more fun, there's no immediate NEED, so I'm sticking it out a while.

Oh I know what everyone is saying. We went and looked at new cobalts yesterday. She wants to go get something new, her stepfather forced her into the focus she was told it was this or nothing at the time when she got it. The car has been wrecked and not put back together like it should have been. It's missing plastic pieces that go behind the bumper. If anyone would be getting a car at some point I would. My car is starting to show it's age with 85,xxx Rear crank seal leak, trans cooler lines are leaking, lifter noise, no low blower speeds on HVAC, HVAC cluster does not light up. and there are some more things lol.
