GM’s global product development efforts will converge in one city as the new 2008 Cadillac STS; two Buick performance models and a refreshed Buick LaCrosse sedan; more powerful versions of the HUMMER H2 and H3; and a first-ever Saab E100 bioethanol concept come to the New York International Auto Show, April 6-15 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.
The introductions continue GM’s ongoing product blitz that began the auto show season last November in Los Angeles. Here’s a preview of what GM will show in New York :
Cadillac – The 2008 Cadillac STS features refreshed signature styling inside and out; a new, standard 298-horsepower (222kW) direct-injection V-6 engine; and new performance and safety technologies. They include StabiliTrak with enhanced variable effort steering, as well as a new lane departure warning system and side blind zone alerts. Coming to Cadillac dealers this summer, the 2008 STS extends Cadillac’s heritage of combining luxury, performance and technology.
Buick – Two new performance-enhancing versions of the 2008 LaCrosse and Lucerne sedans evoke a time-honored badge – the Super – that will make fast friends with those who demand a premium performer with elevated design to match. The LaCrosse Super gets a 300-horsepower (224 kW) 5.3L small-block V-8 with Active Fuel Management and, for the first time, Buick’s iconic portholes. The Lucerne Super adds a more powerful version of the legendary 4.6L Northstar V-6, for 292 horsepower (218 kW), as well as specific Super design cues.
The Super badge debuted in the 1940 model year and symbolized Buick luxury, power and performance for 18 years. With the 2008 La Crosse and Lucerne Supers, Buick is taking a great name from its heritage to designate the most premium cars it has ever offered.
In addition, all 2008 LaCrosse models get a new front end inspired by the acclaimed Velite concept car, as well as an enhanced list of standard equipment.
HUMMER – A more powerful, yet more fuel-efficient 2008 HUMMER H2 also features a redesigned interior that complements the vehicle’s legendary ruggedness with refinement. New standard safety features include roof rail curtain air bags.
The HUMMER H3 Alpha also debuts; it is the second member of the brand’s Alpha performance series. With a 295-horsepower (220 kW) V-8 engine and HUMMER’s trademark off-road capability, the H3 Alpha is top dog – on the trails or the turnpike.
Saab – Fresh from its world debut at the Geneva Auto Show, the Saab BioPower 100 Concept showcases the first production-based turbo engine to be optimized for pure, eco-friendly bioethanol (E100) fuel. Demonstrating GM’s leadership in biofuels and bioethanol technology, the 300-horsepower concept features unprecedented performance to match its greatly reduced CO 2 footprint. The production Saab 9-5 BioPower already is Europe ’s top-selling bioethanol (E85)-powered car.
GM Fleet and Commercial Operations – GM will help celebrate the 100 th birthday of the taxi cab in New York City by placing into the city’s taxi service the only vans approved to transport individuals with mobility-related disabilities or spinal cord injuries. The Chevrolet Uplander TC (Taxi Cab) features a lowered floor instead of a raised roof, providing easier passenger entry and exit as well as enhanced vehicle stability.
GM also will feature several concepts and production vehicles in New York that already have created buzz during the auto show season. They include the second-generation 2008 Cadillac CTS; the 2008 Saturn Vue and 2008 Saturn Astra; the Chevrolet Camaro convertible and Chevrolet Volt concepts, as well as the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu; and the 2008 Pontiac G8, and 2008 Pontiac G6 GXP and Torrent GXP models.

2008 Hummer H3 Alpha
On the H2, GM’s gutsy 6.2-liter V-8, also found in the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon Denali, producing 393 horsepower. That may be 10 fewer than in the Caddy, but it’s 68 more than in the previous H2. Torque rises to 415 pound-feet—50 more. A six-speed automatic replaces the previous four-speed unit, and due to its wide gear spacing, the new tranny helps the 6600-pound moving bricks make it as far as 367 miles on a single 32-gallon fill-up (yes, that’s just 11.5 mpg). And that, according to Hummer, qualifies the ’08s as more efficient than last year’s models. The transmission has also been calibrated specifically for the H2’s off-road intentions, and its manumatic is new too. The engine’s strength should allow the H2 to handle trailering duties with greater ease, all the way up to its 8000-pound limit.
Also new for all 2008 H2s is a panic brake-assist feature a first for a full-size GM truck as well as three-row curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, front-seatbelt pretensioners, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system. A new, four-channel anit-lock braking system and now has standard stability control with a special mode optimized for sand and desert racing conditions.
Also noteworthy is the fitment of an SUV-only, optional full-width, two-passenger third-row bench (replacing last year’s single third-row "mother-in-law" seat), bringing max capacity to seven.
On the H3 Alpha, a new trim level for the three-year-old H3, comes with lots of niceties, including—finally—real V-8 muscle. Specifically, the H3 Alpha features GM’s aluminum-block 5.3-liter V-8 that, in the H3, produces 295 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. This is better than the regular H3’s 3.7-liter inline-five, which makes 242 horsepower and 242 pound-feet. These engines share a four-speed automatic transmission but not a five-speed manual. However, the stronger V-8 raises tow capacity to a respectable 6000 pounds from the standard H3’s 4000.

2008 Cadillac STS
The base engine is now the same V-6 as in the STS’s little brother, the 2008 CTS. This is great news, since besides the mill’s additional horsepower (44 more than the 2007 model) and 268 lb-ft of torque (16 more than last year), the new 3.6 is said to suck down less fuel while spewing fewer emissions.
More exterior glitz is added in the form of new door handles, three-inch tailpipes and, of course, side air vents all rendered in bright, shiny chrome. Also new are optional 14-spoke, 18-inch wheels that are likewise polished to a mirror glaze. Interior updates include a new dash design and a new steering wheel with available Sapele Pommele wood trim.
The 2008 STS debuts the latest Stabilitrak stability control system, which now includes programming that does what you’re told to do when the rear wheels start slipping: actively steer into the skid. That’s right, Stabilitrak now steers as well as pulses individual brakes in order to maintain the presumed correct course of path. To be fair, the advantage of the new Stabilitrak stems from the ability of stability control systems to detect a skid earlier than most drivers, and it’s likely that by making minor steering corrections in the process early on, it could actually prevent certain accidents that regular stability control systems might not be able to catch. Other new technologies include a lane departure warning system and a blind spot information system.

The Chevrolet Trax is one of three Chevrolet minicar global concepts that General Motors will unveil at the New York International Auto Show on April 4. Designed to appeal to young car buyers in urban markets, these concepts will prove that art needn’t take a back seat just because the canvas is small. The highly creative concepts drive the energy, diversity and excitement of urban life into cars that deliver good-looking fun, fuel economy and value.
After the April 4 unveiling, democracy lovers will get the chance to pick their favorite by visiting www.vote4chevrolet.com and cast their vote for the concept they prefer. The results will help Chevy determine U.S. market interest in the minicar segment, and which design resonates best with potential buyers.
All three concepts were designed at GM’ s Design Studio in Incheon, South Korea, one of GM’s 11 Global Design Studios. Built on GM’s global mini architecture, they demonstrate the flexibility, creativity and innovative focus of design in GM’s Asia Pacific region.
“These concepts highlight the strength and diversity of GM’s Global Design capabilities, as well as the ability of our Global Product Development team to anticipate and quickly meet the evolving needs of our diverse markets around the world,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design.
The four-door Trax is powered by a 1-liter gasoline engine. The upper part of the exterior is bathed in Blaze Orange, while lower corner panels sport a Burnt Orange matte finish. The paint combination provides a look that reinforces the notion this Chevrolet is all business despite its small size.
