98-04 civic si?
Sunday, March 25, 2007 11:00 PM
Im thinking of getting one, but first im looking for some opinions. The price is right, im not looking for anything super fast just fun to drive so id get a 5spd, great MPG, i like the styling, im looking for something reliable. Im mostly looking for a car to take long cruises on, love doing that lol, the aftermarket for them is great (not for riceing it out, but for repairs and such, parts are easy to find). I hear good things about the engines, my friends civic lasted till around 500,000km's when he sold it, im just wondering is that a common thing with those engines or was he just lucky lol.

Civic Si:
99-00 - Coupe; 1.8 DOHC VTEC;
02-05 - Hathback; 2.0 DOHC i-vtec

The 99-00 Civic Si's are a pretty rare find in stock form anymore. The Electron Blue Pearl is still one of my lifetime favorite colors so if you find one in EBP then definitely pick it up.

The 02-05 Civic Si went back to the hatchback platform and I honestly do not find these cars very attractive at all. They do feature the K-series motor, and they do handle ok.

personally i hate foreign cars w/ a passion (w/ the exception for euro's) but i will admit that the civic is a very strong solid car. deff. on the top 10 list for reliability. the 98-04 styling is pretty good too. if i were to buy one, i'd shoot for a 92-95 ex. i just like that body style a whole lot.

People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......

ya normally i dont like foreign cars either, but im not making alot of $$ atm, so this seems to be best for a daily driver. The reliability and MPG are huge ++'s for me, i cant really think where id find an american car with the same qualities for the same price, if you know of any feel free to suggest em.

Now youre thinking.

Pick up something cheap, easy on insurance, reliable, and with good gas milage.

Civic
Cavalier
Focus
Corolla
W-Body

Beat the ever living piss out of it and drive it to the ground until you figure out what car you would really like to spend money on.

This is a much better plan than asking ppl what car you should buy with X amount of money.

who's hateing import cars?? Im saying my first choice would be something domestic but i never said i hated imports. I have respect for all cars and their owners except for a few, only imports i hate are ones owned by highschool kids who rice them out with body kits and neons while doing nothing performance wise, i think all cars deserve respect for different things. Right now im sorta aiming towards a honda because of the reliability and awsome MPG, which being a 19yr old with limited income is perfect.

Oh yea... he had cams too. Dont know which since he doesnt want people to know what he has because around here NO n/a b16 was running like his! He was in the process of beating a 240 turbo by a car 1/2. Overreved and boom! He went over 9k. Thinking hes fully built! lol we all think this! After we tore it dont we found 1/4 of the piston. Several peices of sleeve and block. Look like he just ran a 100shot. The head was totally smash at cyl 3. Two of the valves were missing! We found metal shavings in the intake mani..... lol. This thing looks bad. But I cant say this B series FTW!!!!! Boy this motor was strong. Everone he ran thought he had more @!#$ done.... even claiming he had nos.

im debateing weather to get a civic SI or just a civic, some people were saying to be careful with the SI cuz they might have been beaten on and stuff, specially if owned by a younger person.

Getting a used SI is like getting a used SRT-4 in my book. You're taking a real chance on a car thats had a good beating. I've always been a fan of the 99/00 Civic SI though. I like the way it looks. The EX's aren't bad though. They respond well to mods and you can probably pick one up a lot cheaper than an SI. Still TONS of aftermarket parts for the SOHC Vtec engine. I've seen complete used homemade turbo kits for these go DIRT cheap.

ya i figured down the road, should i choose to do so, i could boost it or w/e. Tubros are all new to me, so this would probably be a good car to start on.

With any limited edition performance car, you run the risk of buying one that's had the ever living crap run out of it. On the other hand, you stand a decent chance of finding one owned by someone that knew how to properly maintain a vehicle like that, and only pushed it occasionally. My '88 Fiero and my Achieva SCX were both like that.

Im not great with cars so i wouldn't know what to look for, but should i find an SI that i like, and i take it to a mechanic, what (if anything) should he look for to see if its been abused to badly? For that matter what should I look for/listen for while test driving it?

First, size up the former owner. Is he/she under the age of 22 and/or a complete moron? Does he/she brag about how "It'll cruise at 100 MPH no problem" or "iT'z 0nE mAd TyTe RyDe, y0!"? If yes, the car has likely been beaten like a 14 year old penis.

If the car is worth driving, listen for typical things: engine noises at any RPM, suspension squeaks/rattles/groans. Get the car in the air and check any "pocketed" areas for rust. Pull up a corner of carpet & check for water damage. THOROUGHLY inspect the installation of any aftermarket electronics (alarms, cd players/changers, etc).

One thing should be said. shawn brynelson's profile says he's from Canada. In Canada The Civic Si is the canadian equilivant of the american Civic EX. The Civic SIR is the one that is the hatchback.

So there are definately lots of good Civic Si's around. I personally love a 2000 or earlier Coupe Si. I think they are great to drive for a daily car. One thing I have seen on the redesigned 2000-2001 Civics is that they tend to have bad front struts. But I don't think you'll regret buyone one.

Good tips, thanks.

Ya i find 30 or so in searching local "for sale" websites, so FINDING one isn't the problem its finding one thats good that might be tricky, we'll see. Also, how many KM's is alot for a honda motor? If i find something with like 150,000kms is it worth it? Will it last awhile yet, provided its properly maintained?
