Rebuilding a motor help
Sunday, March 25, 2007 8:49 PM
I posted here, because it's a 600 cc motor from a 1993 Yamaha FZR600R

It's disassembled but only as far as removing the head from the block. The pistons are sticking out and have some carbon build up on them.

If I was going to rebuild it, what would I have to do? Could I just clean off the pistons, get new rings, new gaskets, and expect it to run?

I realize it's hard to guess without seeing it. I can get some pictures up tomorrow. But, I'd like to know.

Firsy question is, why do you feel you need to rebuild it? is compression low? whats your leakdown look like? FZR600's need to have the cases split horizontally i believe which immediately means all new crank bearings if i remember correctly.

Have you tried running it as it is? If there is just carbon build up run some sort of engine stablilzer though the engine (i.e OMC engine tuner)

Well, the head is completely separated from the block. That's how it was given to me. I'm not sure if it runs or not, the guy said it did, but I really don't know.

Yeah basically as long as the cylinder walls aren't marred up. Make sure you get torque specs for everything or you will be rebuilding it again soon. You really need to find out the reason it was disassembled in the first place, though. People don't usually tear apart engines that "run fine", unless they are upgrading them.
