...on BMW's...namely the 3 series.
Let's just say that I want a new car (thats right, the J just isn't cutting it anymore) and I'd like to get a 3 series (yes, I know, entry level BMW which every tom dick and harry who wants some "street cred" gets to try to build up his "rep...yo") namely a mid-90's 325.
I dunno how often this might happen, if at all, and yes I've check on some F-bodies, but all of cars I find are either the V-6 *shudders* or are an auto V-8, and I'd like to get a stick like I've always wanted.
Just wondering your opinions on the car, feel free to flame or whatever...

I love the E-36's personally. I'd LOVE to pick up an E36 M3 as a project car one day. Now would I have one of these as a daily driver? Probably not, but still I love the platform.
Agreed an E36 M3 is a fantastic car. great acceleration, handling, and comfort. it's a great way to introduce yourself to BMW ownership. And these days the price is VERY right. Try to find the rare 1996 to 1997 M3 sedan they are the only E36's that will be worth something some day.

Yeah, I had looked a little closer, and I did find a M3 sedan...so I'm gonna see if I can contact the guy and get some more information on it.

Ask him when he changed the cooling system (Thermostat, Water Pump, etc.). If he hasn't replaced it then I would suggest you do it. When I bought my E36 it was already changed luckily. You can find more info here:

What kind of price are the mid 90s m3s down to?

I've never understood the fascination to be honest, theres alot better cars cheaper, faster, nicer, and more reliable
The car is heavy as all BMWs are so despite having well over 300whp it doesnt lay down the type of numbers you would expect and it gets worse gas mileage than alot of v8 trucks
Not to mention good luck having it serviced if its out of warranty, bring some lube
As for the Ls1s you can find 6 speed ones for about 10k with pretty low mileage all over ebay and in local car trader publications, even some firehawks are as low as 15k

Honestly, I have always loved the simple look of the 3 series...regardless of their performance or price.
I don't like huge 4 door sedans personally, so the 4 doors appeal to me. I may even consider a new one in a few years.
300 whp? I doubt it. The last models had 333hp at the crank. No way are they losing 10% w/ the standard FR drivtrain setup.

Rodimus - Pretty much what Stef said, they have the styling that I like, and the motors (at least ive heard) are pretty tough, and the handleing is what I like too.
Not nly that but they have the name and the reputation that follows. Don't get me wrong, I looked for 6 speed F-bodies first, but all I found was a bunch of automatic Z28's and Trans Ams or the V6 models...and that I just don't want.
Wicked1 - thanks for the site
Alex- Thanks for that forum too...ill have lots of reading to do...

Go take a drive or a ride in an E36 M3. They're significantly lighter than today's 3 series, handle better and are all around a more fun car. Will they take an LS1 in the quarter mile? Probably not, but if we're going road racing or autocrossing I want the M3.
Out of Warrenty Bimmer = No.

*Amendment* Out of Warranty GERMAN CAR = No.
I LOVE M3s, but, price is crazy. A friend of mine picked up a 95 lightweight for under $25K. It was INCREDIBLE. E36 platform is a great car. I personally also like the E46 M3 and have thought of trading my car in for one. But then, I think to myself one more time:

I've seen them for 14,000-25,000 depending upon mileage and condition.

agreed. I almost bought a 2002 325xi last fall until I looked into parts/repairs/spoke to some bmw techs.
bottom line. it's not a wise idea to buy a german car out of warranty.
