My Zip Tie Transmission

I`ve noticed the transmission in my wife`s Chrysler Minivan makes a clicking or ratcheting sound when shifting through gears. It makes this sound while coming up to a stop during the 2-1 shift. Also does it in the diveway while i select any gear. I`ve noticed from driving around town other Chrysler transmissions make this sound as well. Anyone ever notice this? Just wondering what makes this sound.

The Caravan and Town & Country(RS) sometimes had axle nut issues. Many times we just retighten the nut and retest it.

The above posters are correct, it is servos, or eletronic solenoids in the transmission. They modulate pressure to the clutch packs by switching on and off at a rapid pace. This allows for smoother shifting of the transmission, and is also one of the reasons Chrysler vehicles take a different fluid than what most other manufacturers specify. The different formulation of Chrysler ATF+4 has a friction modifier, similar to that in limited slip differentials. It keeps the clutch packs properly lubricated and allows them to slip a bit with the solenoid actuation without getting glazed and burnt. Without this fluid, the clutch packs will glaze over, burn out and cause gear slippage. Improper fluid usage is the main cause of failure in Chrysler electronic transmissions.
