Truck under/around $15,000
Monday, February 19, 2007 7:59 AM
Haven't started a topic in a long time now.

Anyway, I'm sick of FWD in snow, especially the Cav in general. What are some nice, preferably used, trucks (SUV, pickup, etc.) for around $15,000.

I'm looking for something decent with gas, doesn't matter if it's horrible. One that can haul a lot of stuff (for moving from school, to home, to the shore). 4WD or AWD is a MUST.

I'm looking around, but my knowledge isn't up there for trucks. Figured you guys would have more to say on the matter.

Thanks in advance!

Theres an ad right here in front of me For a BRAND new 07 Chevy Silverado regular cab starting a $13,999. Ext cabs staring at 16,999 Truck sales are hurting, your best bet is to get brand new.

That's 2wd, V6, no options. Screw that.

For that price range you listed, there are millions of options. Go to edmunds.com and research what you want, narrow it down to some brands, size, SUV or truck, and get back to us.

O noes!

I have gone to Edmund's, just so many choices. Personally, Trailblazer, Xterra, Tahoe, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler...I'm open for anything...not Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsu, Mazda...

Just seeing what the .org likes and dislikes. Final decision is all mine and dependent on the prices, this I understand.

From what I read newer G/C are hit and miss for realibility, hence the lower resale price. I like the TrailBlazer myself. Strong engine, pretty nice interior, good prices. Tahoe is also very strong. The pick between those two depends on the size you're looking for.

O noes!

Trailblazer for sure in that price range...

03-04 Grand Cherokee is awesome..

The new Grands are fine, as everything is under warranty... I almost bought a 4.7l Larado, Loaded, 7k miles for 18 grand from the dealer... So you can easily find something...

Truck wise

S-10
Silverado for sure...

But if you wanna keep it cheap with low miles..Dodge Ram...

Our family has had three new Envoys in the past few years (all short term leases), fully loaded, 4 wheel drive, V-8, heated seats (very nice for winter), and a ton of other stuff and they were all really nice. You could go with either the short ones or the longer ones with the third row seats. I love driving my dad's envoy and thats a wierd thing for me to say because its not usually the kind of vehicles I am into. They drive well in the snow and handle and ride really good in the summer. You can pick up a fully loaded used one for not too much. I would say that or a used Chevy HD truck.

Change of plans...no truck...just got off the phone with my dad. It's best I keep the Cavy until I graduate college, then something new instead of used.

Thanks for all the response though!!

That's the best decision.

I would also like to add that a 4x4 is not so substantially better than a FWD in the snow that you would an extra 10k on it. I've lived in the snowy Great White North my whole life and have driven both 4x4 trucks and FWD cars and I will tell you right here and now that FWD will get you most places that a truck will. I've been up steep hills and backwood trails and other godforsaken places in my FWD crap cars with little problem. You just need to drive a RWD car like Mustang in the snow once to see just how much traction your garden variety Cavalier really has.

That said, trucks rock!

i'll damn sure second that. i went through the mountains in my 02 tacoma prerunner. no 4wd. the roads weren't snow covered, but there was ice. i took up both lanes, sideways, going 3mph for over a mile. it was way not cool. good thing it was early sunday morning and the roads were fairly empty.

on your situation though, good choice sticking with school.

You should be able to pick up a nice, reasonable mileage, 3 year old 4 Runner for $15,000. Can be optioned as functional or as luxed-out as you want, plus an available V8 in a midsize SUV. And it's not a glorified AWD car, like a lot of the "cute utes" running around nowadays.

Boo Mustangs!! We are Vette guys at my house!

I also wanted something that could haul a lot. With my sub in my trunk, there isn't much room back there. It's hell getting 3 of us from college back home just for a short break (like spring break coming up). A truck would be a lot more efficient in moving aspects (as I will no longer really live at home anymore).

And I was also going to finish school, but it's a 260 mile drive from my house through the mountains (or big hills for those out in the west) of PA, which is why the truck would be nice.

i've had my 4x4 colorado for over 2 years now and i can agree with the fwd vs. 4wd comment. the cav with snows was great in the snow for me in buffalo and upstate ny. i'm not sure if i'd buy another colorado simply because i may look at full size trucks. Personaly, aside from oil changes, bgf at's and an alignment, my truck has been great. gas mileage is also very good on it. I think most peoples problems with 4x4's in the snow is the fact that most of them come with highway all season radials, which are car tires. my family has an ion, envoy, silverado, awd equinox, liberty, and some old pos saturn. myself, and my brother in law with the silverado, seem to be the only people that believe tires can affect the way a car handles.

women are like cars you have to test drive the new one before you trade in the old one
