Finally found a Galant VR4...
Monday, January 29, 2007 6:58 PM
Don't get me wrong, I've found plenty of them on ebay, and there's always some for sale on the GVR4 board. But they're usually either modded to the point I don't rust the car to be reasonably reliable, or they've been beaten to sh*t and will take more work than what it's worth. I've held back and waited until I could find one that's completely stock. A virgin, if you will. And this is the one. I dind't get a chance to take pics but I wish I would have for the bank. I'm still working with them to try and get the financing and I'm having a hard time convincing them that the car is worth WAY more than what I'm asking for the loan. And right now my mortgage has my DTI looking a little off - even though I only pay half - and I don't want to do a home equity loan because the hosue is going up for sale in a month or two. Anyway, I struck a tentative deal with the guy, and he is actually wanting to wait until this spring to actually sell it to me, which might work out for the best anyway in terms of finances. He's wanting to give it a total once over to make sure everything is up to date - belts, hoses, etc, and with his garage unheated, he wants to wait for better weather. I msut say that for what he's asking, I kind of feel like I'm stealing the car, as he could easily sell it for way more. Then again he knows this, but he wants to give it a good home and keep it in the area rather than see it go to someone in another state.

But for those that are curious, here's some ifo on the car:

The good:
BONE STOCK - absolutely no mods whatsoever
Nile Black (black with silver and purple metal flake, kind of looks like steel grey)
JDM 4G63T with 30K miles
5-speed transmission
AWD, AWS - AWS still functions, but the rack has a leaky seal, will be fixed prior to delivery
Power windows, locks, sunroof
Factory AM/FM/CD/Cassette
Factory leather interior
factory color-matched 15" wheels, new tires
NO RUST - a miracle, consider ing it's been an Iowa car since the original sale
Still has the factory pinstriping, no peeling or missing pieces

The bad:
Original clear coat has some spots peeled or faded away, easy fix
door pillars are faded, easy fix
Passenger headlight and driver fog light have rock-chipped lenses - have replacements
E-Brake trim panel missing - have replacement
Struts are worn - again, already have replacements

Basically it's a 16-year old car, and the problem areas are nothing compared to what I've seen in other cars I've looked at.

The plans:

Performance:
EVO VIII cam swap
JDM Cyclone intake manifold
CAI, 2G MAF
EVO III "Super" 16G
EVO VIII intercooler
Aluminum hardpipes
Stainless equal-length manifold
EVO III 2.5" O2 housing
3" downpipe and exhaust
EVO III-RS 550cc injectors
JDM VR4-RS fuel pump
Apex'i SAFC II
SPEC clutch

Exterior:
1G DSM factory springs (lowers the car about 1.5")
OEM struts
EVO III wheels
JDM vented hood
JDM front and rear bumpers
JDM exterior lighting

Interior:
Leather shift boot - the stock accordion boot is just ugly
1G Eclipse steering wheel - the stock one is kind of dorky
Full Elemental Designs sound system

That's really just about it. A lot of the parts I need are already sitting in my friend's basement - we tend to collect parts as they're becomoing harder and harder to find, especially the JDM bits. Once it's completed this will be mainly a weekend car, something to take out on cruise nights, go to club meets, track days here and there, maybe the occasional drive to work.

this thread is SERIOUSLY worthless without pics. I demand pictures of this car. VR4's are the bomb, they remind me of my Thunderbird in that they kick serious arse, but most people forgot about them so you get the total sleeper effect.

$2K. Book is just shy of $3K and they typically sell for $4-6K in this condition. That's the part that's hard to convince the bank of. They see "Mitsubishi Galant", and they think VR4 is only a trim package, when in reality, it's an entirely different car in itself. I know full well that if I wanted to, I could spend a weekend fixing the stuff I mentioned, give it a good detail job, and resell the car for twice what I paid. There were only 3K of these cars brought to the US - they're rare, and out of those only a handful have been completely untouched as this one has. I've looked for six years and this is the first stock VR4 that hasn't been completely neglected.

Um, i know what "a" VR4 looks like. I want to see his VR4. So Google wouldn't help me much.

Since I haven't paid for the car and taken delivery, I suppose you can't say it's mine, now can you? I'm working on pictures but I don't have a digicam so I have to get one. After he gets the tune up done he wants to bring it in to Des Moines so I can take it for a test drive, that way I can be 100% sure I want to go through with the deal. I can take some pictures then. Otherwise I'm also looking through our registry to find some pics. We have quite a few as cars tend to change hands, pictures get uploaded as projects progress, etc.

Ya'll will get some decent pics when I do. M'kay, pumpkin? Now if you have anything constructive to add, please, by all means feel free. I talked to Shane today (the owner) and he sent me some pics off his cell but only the shot of the dash came out worth a damn. Even this one is a bit blurry but whatever. I need to renew my premium membership before I can upload anything else anyway. But at least it's something:

You must be in Canada. Closest you'll get is the Eagle 2000 GTX. They only got like 135hp but drop $1400 on the front clip and rear end of a JDM Galant VR4 and go fricken nuts. Frankly, I'd kill for a 2000GTX jsut because in the US they're even more rare thant he VR4. There's a guy in Wisconsin I think that has one - and he's always getting questions about it because nobody has ever heard of them here.

Yeah I think those are on our club site message board too. I'm pretty sure 691 is, not sure about #5. Not every owner registers with our club. We do our best to track all 3000 cars from the two years but it's difficult to do. Like right now we're trying to track 1/1000 (the 92 models) because one of our Des Moines crew, where I'm at, just bought 1000/1000 (known as The Last One). And the other day, we found one online in Texas in a salvage yard, complete, but it needs a front end. It'd be nice to find a buyer because it's scheduled to be crushed.

Performance:
EVO VIII cam swap - Different style 4G63. I would stay with 1G cams. They where the best of the DSMs.
JDM Cyclone intake manifold - It's no good without the JDM ECU calibration.
CAI, 2G MAF - Junk I now use a GM MAF. It makes a huge difference
EVO III "Super" 16G - Can't argue there
EVO VIII intercooler - Crap from the factory. Use a Apex'i bar and plate style.
Aluminum hardpipes - Cool
Stainless equal-length manifold -
EVO III 2.5" O2 housing - With a 3" exhaust this will be a bottleneck 3" from the header back. That will help fight off boost creap.
3" downpipe and exhaust
EVO III-RS 550cc injectors - Use Supra 660cc
JDM VR4-RS fuel pump
Apex'i SAFC II - GM MAF will eliminate this item.
SPEC clutch - Don't forget the flywheel.

Welcome to DSMs!

Thanks for the welcome, but this is my third time around with DSMs. Most of the parts I'm using, with the exception of the clutch, intercooler, exhaust, and cams, are parts left over from my 1G Talon. After I wrecked it I pulled off everything that could be salvaged and boxed it all up.

EVO VIII cams are 262 degree and have been proven to provide excellent gains when installed with a 16G, front mount, and exhaust. At the same time they don't shift the power band and they're lighter than ant of the 1st Gen cams.

I can agree with the GM MAF, the 2G wsa an option being I have the parts, and again, they work well.

Same with the EVO VIII front-mount. We use them a LOT on the VR4s and they work better than you'd think.

The Cyclone intake - we do have a spare JDM ECU to go with it.
