I am looking to get an 01-04 Silverado, and all the ones I am looking at on-line have either the 4.8 or 5.3 litre engines in them.
What are the HP/TQ and MPG specs for each if you know them, or I link I could go too?
Also, how about reliability? Although, I would imagine that they are both pretty equal in that.
Thanks.

When we wanted to get one, we test drove two Sierras with both engines. And the 5.3 is a beast compared to the 4.8. It pulls and accelerates much harder and faster. Depends what you want it for though. My mom tows every now and then, but its still her daily driver.
My father has a 04 silverado w/ the 5.3 and its balls to the walls. I've ripped out tree stumps and hauled so much without a problem. The 5.3 can even be a little too much power for daily driving, it u want it to be
I'd get the 5.3 if i were you.
my dad had had the Silverado 1500 Z71 4x4 with the 5.3L. that was a really nice truck and it had a lot of power and was great at hauling things. for the power on them the 5.3 had 285 hp and 325 ft-lbs and the 4.3 had 200 hp 260 ft-lbs
@!#$ the 5.3 and 4.8, get the 6.0
Those are some BADASS engines for those trucks, insane amounts of power and torque, of course they are only offered in the heavier trucks, but soooo worth it.

they offered them in the vortecmax trucks too. I think those were only a 05-06 thing though. But luckily the 6.0 is a DIRECT SWAP with the 4.8 or 5.3. Same wiring harness everything. Only problem is it will eat that 4L60e alive.
I have a 4.8L.
Compared to some friends (same year, model, everything) 5.3s and 6.0s, it's faster on the top end. It makes literally no power below 3000 rpm. It has to be wound out, and it's not that it doesn't like it, but it's odd winding out a truck like that sometimes. Down low though, it doesn't have near the torque that the other two motors have.
Towing wise, I have a 5000lb boat, and HAD a (when loaded to the hilt) 6500lb travel trailer, and never have had any issues except on the biggest of hills, and even then it was just being careful.
Duramax Diesel FTW.

i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
Well, I drove 7 Silverado's today, all ext-cab 4x4, in different trim levels, but all the same size truck. Three 4.8's, and four 5.3's.
My thoughts after today, they would both feel about the same (so good tq for both engines) from 0-60, then the 5.3 would keep pulling up to about 140, the begin to die off to a slow acceleration, where the 4.8 would die off to a slow acceleration around 75. So the 5.3 had the win there.
From 70, the 4.8 would barely feel like it was getting faster, but the 5.3 would put you back in the seat. Even from a 70 stomp.
So if I get a new truck, it will be the 5.3 for sure, and the only reason I say "if" is because I saw a really nice 2004 Cadillac CTS, for less then the 2003 Silverado's I was looking at. I have always wanted a Caddy, and this car was just beautiful, and I pretty much fell in love with it instantly. The problem, it is RWD, and I have never been without a 4x4 in my life, and don't know if I want to start now.

Yeeaaaah, bull@!#$. Those trucks are governed at 99mph. How you hit 140 is beyond me, and if you really did that truck was NOT stock. And, if you had the balls to go 140mph in a truck, you should be shot. They are not @!#$ sports cars. I haven't even gone that fast in my Camaro even though I could if I wanted to.

Pretty much.
They are both good engines. But if you can afford a 5.3, get it.
I have the 4.8 and it is a damn good engine, I won't deny that. However, obviously there is no replacement for displacement.
The only reason to get the 4.8L is if you want a manual tranny.

or if you can't afford/find a truck in your price range with the 5.3L. Every 5.3 had well over 75k on them when I looked and I figured I would settle for a 30k 4.8.
