so i am stationed in italy and i have a 1984 toyota carola as my get around car. well this morning i go outside to go to post and the car wont start. its acting like its out of gas. the battery is trying to turn it over but its acting like its not getting the gas or somthing. ive never had this problem before please help and i know it has plenty of gas i put gas in it on christmas eve.
Check the distributor, if it has one (both cap and rotor) Might not be getting spark...
it does have a distributor and i know there is a way to check to see if it sparking or not by using a screwdriver but i dont remember exactly
Take the wire off the plug...hold the plug end of the wire tightly in your hand and have a friend crank the car over. If it hurts, you have spark!
No, dont do this.
You can goto a parts store and see if they have a spark tester.
Also, grab some 2+2 Gum Cutter and have someone try and crank the car over while you
lightly spray it into the intake, if it starts then you've got a fuel problem. (i.e. pump, relay, etc..)
thanks for the advice but im in italy they dont just have a car parts store on the corner like the states i think it might be the distributer cap. when i took it off there are 4 copper tit like things well there supposed tho be and 2 of tem are worn to the plastic of the cap i think this may be it
so could this be the problem
might be the fuel pump, check to see if theres gas getting to the front of the car
^^ If 2 of the terminals on the inside of the distributor have worn away, the car will be firing on 2 cylinders. Example... take your car, pull the plug wires on the #2 and #3 cylinders and try to start it... if it starts, it will run like poo.
i ordered a new distributor cap today so i will see if thats the problem when it gets here. also this may sound dumb but how do i check if gas is getting to the front of the car
did you check if you flooded the car? cut the fuel pump with the fuel cut off switch or pull the fuse for the fuel pump. of the car starts, let it run until it shuts off because of the lack of fuel, turn pump back on or replace fuse and try again. if you flood a car with fuel by pushing the gas (mines flooded before without pushing the gas) there wont be a proper mixture of fuel and air and you wont turn over.
i would still replace the distributor, but i would check this for a problem aswell as it seems no one has mentioned it and it is such an easy thing to eliminate.

ya funny thing i tried to find the fuse to the fuel pump and cant lol i found the main fuse box under the hood and no fuel pump fuse and i cant find any others
If it's a 4AG series engine you may have a machanical fuel pump. Is this a carburatated engine or a TBI setup?
