Hey guys, I know this is an odd one, but I've been searching all over the net and I don't know how to determine it or not. My girlfriend has a 98 Plymouth breeze with a 2.4L DOHC motor. The timing belt broke yesterday on her way back to Minnesota. She's currently stuck in nowhere, SD and I was wondering if anyone knew if this motor is an "interference motor" or not cuz there's not point to putting a new timing belt in if the valves are screwed. Thanks a lot anyone who can help, I came on here cuz this is the best place I can think of for car advice. I know it's not a j-body, but I just don't know if there's a place you can find that out or something.
Aren't most small engines interference?
If i had to guess, ide say yes it is.
That's pretty much what I was thinking. I talked to my gf again and she said the mechanic said it would cost about 450 which seems like more than the timing belt (should be 200-300?) but definately not the cost of the headwork. She told me it was the timing belt, but then said it had to do with something electrical that was a $300 part. So I don't know what she's talking about but I don't know if they're just trying to screw her over by replacing the belt, charging her for it, and then saying "oh wait, looks like your valves are bent, that'll be another 3 Grand."

Im guessing the shop is trying to take advantage of your girl , because unfortunately , they dont know whats going on underneathe the hood. And im failing to see what could happen to electrical after a snapped timing belt?
Maybe have her call you , and you can speak to this shop directly?
yea i'm with jersey kid........i had a female cousin that got was going to get screw with something like this and my uncle chewed them a new one and they gave her the money back.

they are definately trying to over charge. z24princess had her timing belt break in he old car, ( 93 dodge shadow) while she was going down the beltway in dc. The shop only charged her $175 to replace the belt, as soon as your belt breaks the engine will stop so it should not have hurt the valves, as we were worried about the same as you. i say take it somewhere else if she can. or make a special visit down there, either way sounds like they are trying to take advantage.....P.S 3 B's... How's it feel to get beat by a pickup!
Ask yourself one question punk..That Thing Got A HEMI?
I also forgot to say that my first car was an 85 mazda 626 lx that i purchased from my cousin that had replaced the waterpump and the auto place he got the pump from never told him that there were two types square and round belt type. So when I received the car the belt popped off twice with no prob other than having to replace the belt. So i agree with stone cold sleeper and call the better business bureau.

Well I got down there after my final on Wednesday and turns out they had to replace the belt, tensioner, and idler pulley. So I guess 500 was about right for all of that. They seemed really nice and managed to work a little late on Wednesday to get her on the road again. It was quite the hectic week.
