VW tows a 747 Jet

Don't ya love propaganda?

With 553 lb-ft of torque on tap, the V10 TDI Touareg is already a serious stump puller, with maximum load capacities for the vehicle of roughly 7,716 pounds for trailers and 3,615 pounds for the rear axle. But towing a jet is of course an entirely different matter.

In order for the Touareg to be able to tow the jet, the weight of the vehicle first had to be increased, which was necessary so that engine power could be converted into propelling force. Steel balls and plates were distributed in the SUV, adding 9,579 pounds of extra weight. Total weight of the Touareg was 15,498 pounds with a weight distribution of 6,074 pounds in front, 9,424 pounds in back.

Other modifications included adding a shorter transmission out of a Touareg V8 to the front axle drive in place of the V10 TDI transmission. The crew also increased tire air pressure and limited the maximum speed in an effort to protect the tires. Everything else was the same as the street version.

The vehicle was then fitted with a special towing device to enable it to hook up the Boeing 747 to the Touareg’s standard trailer hitch. The experiment took place at the Dunsfold Aerodrome in England outside of London.

It took some effort, but the Touareg was able to get the jet moving from a standing stop and tow it 150 meters with a top speed of just under 5 mph. Sounds like a certain VW employee is due some bragging rights, and thanks from the VW press staff for a neat way to promote the Touareg.

How many VW owners will ever even tow with their Touareg? I'm guessing 7.

Thats no 747....that was the prototype jet from Casino Royale! Notice the engines are in twin pods under the wing, more like a B-52...

Still pretty cool, though...would like to see a video....

sorry typeing and not looking lol

No frame/hitch reinforcement?

um y would they add weight?

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

I think it's funny that they are bragging about how they pulled a 747 with it, but it's not anything like the stock version that they sell. They added a ton of weight, put in a shorter transmission.. it took alot of work to get it to do that.

I would be impressed if they pulled it off of the dealerships lot, hooked it to the 747 and pulled it.

Your trying to tell me that with simple work like this, a cavalier could pull that jet? Did you miss this part?

Quote:

553 lb-ft of torque on tap

Lets compare to a cavalier

150 pound-feet of torque

Same goes for ling427ttvette

How did they do a ton of work? A special Hitch...Of course, it has to hook up to a airplane..

Added some weight, and changed out the tranny...seems pretty simple to me.

damn you guys are missing the point..... they took a STOCK toureg, and changed out the transmision with another STOCK Toureg, not a crazzy purpose built trans, a stock trans and pulled an air plane with it. The added weight doesn't take away how impressive that is.... physics will tell you its physically impossible to pull an air plane with that little weight, you can not possibly get traction to do it, the whole point of the added wieght is to keep more weight on the tires so they will get traction, plus thats almost an extra 10,000 lbs its pulling on top of an airplane. As for the hitch..... common sence tells you no factory tow hitch on a passenger car is gonna attach to airplane hahahah, obviously they have to make an adapter to make it fit.

Ok, so it's stock. But, obviously the way this one is setup is not the same way that is available to the public. They had to modify it with other parts to make it pull this plane, even if those parts were "stock" it is still not in original form.

So @!#$ what....you cannot deny its raw power....

What other cars could you modify the exact same way as this one or even less, and pull the same plane?

Put enough weight on a Dodge 3500 dually with a Cummins and I guarantee it would pull it without modification.

I was referring to reinforcement. I would like to see how the hitch/frame (a uni-body at that) act to the initial 'shock' to the weight.

But all in all....you can put the right gearing into *almost* anything and do that. It's all about the initial movement...after that it's cake.

Too bad there isn't a video.

Well nooo @!#$....I could make a list of trucks..

Your comparing a Dually Cummins to a VW SUV/Car

Yeah, that's not a 747. Probably an AirBus model... in either case, that's still alot of weight.

I don't think its a real Toureg either.... not sure if they are different in Europe but those headlights don't even resemble any Toureg here in the states
