The union president at the Saturn plant in Spring Hill, Tenn., said General Motors Corp. has decided not to build a new front-wheel-drive minivan there, leaving workers wondering whether they will have any vehicles to assemble in the future.
Company officials confirmed the minivan plans have been canceled, but said they had never made a decision on where it would have been built.
In a newsletter dated Tuesday, UAW Local 1853 President Mike O'Rourke said the GM board decided Thursday to cancel the new minivan, which he said was tentatively scheduled to be built at the Spring Hill assembly plant.
GM has not said what it would build at the plant outside Nashville, Tenn., after it stops building the Saturn Ion compact and the Saturn Vue sport utility vehicle there next year.
GM had planned to end production of the Ion in December, but decided to continue making the car at least through March because of demand created by high gas prices.
The next generation of Vue will be produced in Mexico, and Ion production has been canceled.

"Yes. Stay the course," he answered. "Product announcements are made by the corporation, and we will leave that to them."
And GM employs about 4,700 hourly workers at the Spring Hill complex, which includes an assembly plant as well as a four-cylinder engine plant.

I hope he is not talking about the ion, 'cause then he's sadly mistaken; they introduced the S platform in 90 and the delta in 2002. If he's talking about another car i don't know which one.

Yeah I seen that already. I really don't know what will go there. I knew that Spring Hill was going to get the minivans. That left Moraine Assembly getting the overflow of the Lambda's. But now it looks like we have to compete. The best thing going for Moraine Assembly is the lower wages we get paid and the more flexable scheduling. Oh our Painthouse kills theirs.

I think they just mean the compact Saturn vehicle in general. Spring Hill is the only place that Saturns compact models have been built since day 1.
