Here's a short run down. I want a new car but no need to buy it right now because i'm leaving for Korea soon. As soon as I get back though i'll be buying one. I want to do all my research before hand so I know exactly what I want and what to look for and how much to pay for.
I'm pretty damn set on an AWD car. I've decided that. AWD and a 5-speed is pretty much my baseline. I dont know exactly how much I can spend as of yet but I know no matter what the limit is going to be 20k. Right now i'm looking at a used WRX. I like the 4-door option. Its pretty decently quick from the start and has room for improvement. I know everyone is going to say STI but I think insurance will kill me. If I can afford it then yes i'll go STI. If that comes up though what about an evo. So heres a list of cars. Please feel free to add and or comment on them.
WRX
WRX STI
Evo
Impreza RS
Legacy (I only want one if they are turbo, felt pretty slow to me when I test drove one)
Galant VR4
1 or 2g Eclipse/Talon AWD Turbo
I know there is other AWD cars but I'm sticking to somewhat of a sports car. I know some wont consider the legacy a sports car but you get my drive hopefully. Please throw anything in. All I ask is 20k or under. Thanks for the help guys.
Try to look for an older A4 or S4 AWD. Check around the early 2000 period, might be around teh 20K area......

Hmm, didn't think about the Golf R32. I really like those I dont know how much those run. I'll look into them.
an R32 runs around 30,000 new. So it's right in the same price area of an evo/sti.
^^Used
STI is prolly out of my range along with an Evo. I found a couple used ones around 20k mos were just a hair over. I dont think I really want an STI/Evo anyways. I know insurance would be a joke.
another thing the R32's where only made in 04
R32 would be nice.
Personally, though, I'd got for a Legacy 2.5GT. Turbo, AWD, but still with a touch of luxury. All this without the high repair premiums that an Audi or VW would pull in.

Stop being such a cheap ass and get the 911 turbo
EVO VIII is alot sexier than the STi, atleast .... that is what I think.

Very nice car, but used there are going for over 20K.

just don't drive it like a sports car or they'll void your warranty. Mitsu is a PITA when it comes to any warranty claims with the cars engine or transmission.
if you do get a WRX get the one with the 2.5 block, you'll be sorely dissapointed if you don't, the 2 engines are night and day. Also if your really searious on a WRX get the STi, the 2nd gear in the standard WRX is made out of "glass", noticebly destroyed by a nice crunching noise, so after you wrack up the cost of one or 2 transmissions, you've got the cost of your STi already. Seeing as your a "sporty" driver you'll like to know that you can beat on the car and it'll survive.
Make sure you visit Nasioc.com and ask what to look for when buying either car, there very knowledgeable if not a litt crazy in the head.
No matter what you decide I'd go subaru, the AWD in a subaru is top notch and the road feel is great, if you want a more comfy interior go with a Legacy. Older Audi's turbo's while nice cars will require anywhere from 1-2K per year in maintenence, its just a facet about the car, go on any older Audi forum and they'll tell you the same thing, once you bridge 30k->50k the car will need additional maintenence regularly.
Good luck, your gonna love AWD.

Hey guys thanks for all the help. I was in serious thought in a subaru probably an impreza but you just made me think even more about it. As for the Legacy GT, well thats what I'd really love to have. I know its out of my range though. I dont want a Legacy because the wife and I looked at a slightly used one and I didn't like the power it had or should I say the lack of power. Atleast thats how it felt. It wasn't a GT and it was running at about 22k range.
Dubduce18's, you're 100% right thats what i'll do. Errr....ummm i'm a little short can I bum a few bucks? lol
Ling427, not sure whats going to happen with the Camaro. I'll let you know. Possibility its going to be parted out. I know one thing for sure. My custom sub box is comming out. Made just for a 3rd gen F-body. Want to buy it? =P PM me i'll talk more. Can't say too much ATM until I finish up some stuff with insurance.
IamRascal, thanks for all the great info. I would really like to have the STI. I know it seems like a big range but it's going to be from 10k-20k. It all depends on how much I save over in Korea. I say WRX because I know I can swing that no matter what. I've found some used ones with a decent amount of miles for 10k. Of course the newer ones are in the 20k range the 02's 03's are in the 10k range.
I know one thing for sure. The car I buy will not have a single mod. Not even a exhaust or intake. No one can convince me otherwise that a modded car is drove like a modded car. Atleast once in a while. I just feel I have a better chance in getting a good solid car with a non-modded car.
NOOOO DO NOT PART IT OUT. It's a beautiful car, don't part it..
If I had the money I would buy it from you. What size of subs will the box hold? I might be interested, not sure though. I kind of need something a little more concealed than that, I've already been broken into once.
1983 Camaro Z28
Find a nice 1990 - 1993 Celica Alltrac
The box holds 2 12's. It goes in that spare tire well in the back. With the window tinted you cant even see them. I dont really see another way to have a good sub setup and have them more concealed. Plus I have that pull over cover that I can pull over them and you can't see them.
As for the Altrac, they are decent cars but I dont really dig them much. I rode in one a few times and even ran with a guy at the trac. Wasn't impressed at all.
I've liked all the idea yet but none more than a WRX. I'm really diggin the 4-door as pathetic as it sounds. Since my wife and I had our daughter I haven't had a real nice car specially a 4-door. It would be nice if we went somewhere and I was driving we could take my car. Its too much of a pain putting her in the back of the camaro. If I had a 4-door i'd probably get another car seat and leave it in.
Having a family oriented car thats still fun to drive would be great.

Nothing pathetic about it. 4 door cars are more practical, less on insurance, and much more convenient. I love having my sedan, and probably always will have one as my daily driver. I, too, really want the 2.5GT, but won't have one for a few years yet.
As for not modding it, if you end up with a Subie, check out some of the stuff that Subaru has for it. I know they make a great intake for the 2.5GT. Just do a few minor things. After having a modded car, going to one that isn't modded at all stinks. Trust me, I know. My Cav had quite a bit done to it, and my Elantra has nothing ('cause it's not worth doing anything to). But I wish I had something in the middle of the road.
Good luck with whatever you do, and keep us posted.
Also, and probably most importantly, godspeed on your journey to Korea. Keep your head down and your spirits up; that's a scary part of the world to be going to right now.

Mazda Speed 3, I know it's turbo, i just can't remember if it is awd:/

MS3=FWD
MS6=AWD
From what I read they said that's the reason power output is lower in the MSPD3 than the 6. The lack of an allwheel drive system to put the power to the ground.
How about a
Volvo S40 T5 AWD?!
We just bought an 06 S40 2.4i(non-AWD) and love it. Good power and handles very good.
The S40 t5 AWD is not worth the price. It's in the same range as a 328xi. And the xi s a MUCH better car.
About $5300 more MSRP for a 328xi vs a T5 AWD....IMO it's not worth the extra dough.
I say go with a Subaru WRX STi or better yet an EVO!!
I just know a guy I work with was in the mart for an AWD sedan himself. He was looking at either the 328xi or the S40 T5 AWD, he test drove both. Everything he said about the T5 was great until he drove the 328xi. After that test drvie he said theres no way he could convince himself to get the lesser car.
But yea, all said 30,000 price range AWD sedan, my vote goes EVO IX. I'm with you
