You know what I don't understand?

Why is anyone still buying Cobalt SS/SC's with the MazdaSpeed 3 out/on the way (whichever it is right now)?

Only $1400 more for a base MS3 vs base SS/SC, and the MS3 comes with a lot more features, more room, 6 speed, more power, etc. I mean, where's the hold up at all?

I saw the MazdaSpeed 3 featured on MotorWeek's "New Keys" segment last night. It looks very nice for a hatch and the price for 260 horsepower pocket rocket isn't too bad. I think MotorWeek said the starting price would be around $23,000 for a base MazdaSpeed 3 which isn't too damn shabby. If I was in the market for such a vehicle, it would be at the top of my list. The only downside is that they may be a little rare as MotorWeek estimated that only about 5,000 will be made for the 2007 model year but I'm guessing more will be released for the next year's model..

There is no base MS3....the only options you can get are dealer installed accessories

Well there is sport and GT.

Both have the 6 speed 2.3 Turbo with 263hp.

But the sport has :
18" alloy wheels
Automatic climate control system
Unique rear roof spoiler
Aluminum pedals
Cloth Seats Only

And the GT has:
Automatic on/off Xenon (HID) headlights
Rain-sensing front windshield wipers
Bose premium audio system, 222-watt digital amplifier, 7 speakers
Theft-deterrent system
Leather seats only

They both have upgrades availble..depends on the model
Sirius
Navigation

Only 4 exterior colors avalible, and yes from what i here, not many will be made.

hm...why do a lost of people drive f150's instead of dodge rams? why a civic and not a sentra? why a camry and not an elantra? oh oh oh, why buy a car when you can buy a faster, cheaper, easier on gas motorcycle?

oh yea, i know why, cuz not everybody buys a vehicle based on options/performance. some people actually get a car that they want, like, or can afford. to some people, another grand or two is the difference between handling the payment and not handling the payment.

think i actually wanted a 4 banger cavalier? hell no! for an extra couple of grand i could have gotten a truck, which is what i really wanted. but an extra couple of grand put me over my budget, so i settled on what i could afford....

i think i'm done now.

Brand loyalty.
Million other cars that are better, but some people just want a Chevy no matter what.

Well MotorWeek referred to the $23,000 Sport model as the base model, with the Grand Touring being the top of the line MazdaSpeed 3 model. I may be wrong on the wording but I think that's the gist of what they said.

Oh ok, here in Canada we don't have these sport and grand touring models. There is only one...

You can't even compare these two cars yet. The prices/models have been released for the MazdaSpeed, but there hasn't been anything on the Cobalt SS. The only thing POSSIBLE is the stats on the engine (260hp, 280tq). No price has been said, styling, body, etc.

Exactly.

Some people may actually like the way a cobalt looks better too.
Obviously the MazdaSpeed3 is a better value, but for some people that doesn't really matter.

I would take a Cobalt SS 100% of the time over a mazda

I asked the dealer about the MS3. If I ordered it at the beginning of October, the earliest it would come in would be late January. With the cavalier having well over 100k on it and feeling like it would fall apart anyday, I couldn't wait that long for a new car, so I said f-it. Didn't go with the ss/sc either, it was too small for me. That's what I really liked about the MS3, the 5-door hatch. Just seemed more practical.

is there a two door version (or would that be 3) of the MSpeed hatch? That could be a reason... some people don't want yet another 4+ door speedster. They don't look as "sporty". At least the SS-supercharged is a good ol' 2dr coupe.

Uhhh... Maybe I should claify for the less intelligent . . .

The NEW Cobalt SS (08) is what the Mazda Speed is matching against. The mazdaSpeed is coming out in a few weeks, the Cobalt is coming out next month. The NEW Cobalt SS & mazdaSpeed are supposed to have the same stats . . . Thats what i was talking about. How can you compare the two cars, if one of them isn't even out yet?

And why would anyone buy the MS3 when the Caliber SRT-4 is on the way? Its going to have *300* horsepower!

People buy cars for lots of reasons. HP is actually pretty far down the list. Brand loyalty, recommendations (ie other people's brand loyalty) and looks are probably the top 3 reasons people buy cars. Remember, enthusiasts only make up a very small percentage of total vehicle sales. That is why you don't see a whole lot of EVOs or STis on the road.
