you know...lets just take the SS badge and rip it off the cool scale. its worthless anymore.
GO PATS!!!
This is your supposedly "SS Equinox."
I think people are are intrigued at the more aggressive front end on many spy shot and think "oh-- Equinox SS." GM will put 100 fuel-cell electric Chevrolet Equinox crossover.
GM says its front-drive Equinox fuel-cell car will go 200 miles on 4.2 kg of gaseous hydrogen carried in three 10,000-psi tanks below the floor, ahead of and above the rear axle. The car will meet all 2007 federal safety regulations, and the fuel-cell propulsion system and hydrogen storage have been installed without compromising the four-seater’s passenger or cargo capacity. The vehicle is designed, GM says, for durability of at least 50,000 miles. That includes operation in a range from 13 degrees below zero to more than 100F degrees. Top speed is quoted at 100 mph.
This Chevy will be offered in three U.S. markets: California, metro- New York and Washington, D.C. Pricing and other details are still being sorted, one year from the volume deliveries.

Lame. GM hasn't made a proper SS model since the last Camaro SS.
Every SS model since then, has ruined the rep of that trim level.
I don't know why GM fans allow the company to ruin that name. If Honda made a Odessey type R, Honda fan would scream murder. Or a Ford F150 Cobra, or Subaru Forester WRX?
Come on GM, you are messing it up. GM had the right idea with the 90's Impalla SS and the Camaro SS. Follow Ford's example with the SVT models. It should be saved for the most elite performance package the company offers. Not wasted on some upgraded trim and wheels.
Maybe if GM and Ford do have a merger, Ford can get GM to stop screwing around and throwing that SS badge on everything with wheels.

You mean like the F-150 Lightning? which everyone loves?

while i disagree with GM badging EVERYTHING with an SS, there has been SOME good since the camaro SS. the trailblazer SS is a bitchin truck. i would take that in a second. the SS silverado (although not the performance minded truck of the SRT10 and lightning) is a good truck. good power, decent numbers, still with 4 doors and the ability to actually tow something.
GO PATS!!!
^ let's also not forget the new Impala/Monte SS models. There are owners on LS1tech.com that have been hitting mid-to-high-13's in completely-stock form (a 13.67 out of a Grand Prix GXP, which is nearly identical). Not too bad, considering the last "proper SS" (camaro) ran mid-to-low-13's and couldn't haul 5 people and a trunk full of stuff across the country.
Can someone please explain to me what their beef is with the SS badge of today? There are no SS vehicles in the lineup today that are not worthy of it. It was far worse in the past when for example an S10 SS just had a ZQ8 suspension and SS badging.
I offer for example:
1969 Camaro SS
Rated: 290hp, 3800 lbs, over the counter parts available to easily push 400hp.
2006 Cobalt SS
Rated: 205hp, 3000 lbs, over the counter parts available to easily push 260hp.
Is the Cobalt somehow not worthy of the SS badge? Explain why.
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about
the former." - Albert Einstein
cobalt SS is not worthy of the badge becuase when a cobalt SS pulls up to you it dosent scare you. Rember time scales things. Sure the 60's SS had 260 horsepower and probably ran a 15 second quarter mile. But the economy cars ran like a 20.
When an SS pulls up to me, i want to be like damn that thing hauls. LS1's do that, superchaged ecotec will never do that.
GTP does it (I assume light mods)
Though i must admit, the boosted ecotec, might do it, if they come out with a real gxp model, that runes low 13's.
Not that you guys haven't completely jacked the thread already...
I want to point out that you can bet your ass there are engineers who work for GM who cry every night in bed because some bean-counting marketing director decided that sales would benefit from scavengeing brand clout of the SS badge. I'd just rather blame fell on the appropriate shoulders is all. Now, as for Chevrolet's SS line, I don't see a problem. When I think "SS" I think power, and possibly some other sporty refinements over a base model, but mostly power. The Cobalt SS has a good 30 or 60hp (145-175/205=30/60)over the base model. The Impala and Mote Carlo SS' have 92 more hp (303-211=92) The Malibu SS has 96 more hp (240-144=96). So, you let me know which one of those dosn't deserve some sort of common Chevrolet sport designation over their base models.

I agree.. SS means ugly body kit, ugly rims, and 50 more hp than the base model.. Come on GM..

He has a good point.
That-anf most people customized the crap out of those cars back then..just like they are doing now...
And yes, they are both in the pipeline...late 07-earlish 08...
I saw a tester a few weeks ago around here...

That was exactly what I ment. My point was that GM is the only one that slaps the SS badge onto tons of vehicles and ruins the name. Ford has the lightning. They could have called it a F150 corba, but that would be stupid. So they came up with the lightning. Same thing with Subaru, they could have called the forester a WRX, but that would ruined the name.
Come on. Dodge threw the SRT name onto the Viper, because it kicks ass. It also made the SRT-10, by putting a viper motor into the Ram. Those vehicles are mean, wicked machines.
The SRT4 should not have the SRT name. Dodge messed up on that one. Was the SRT4 a quick car, ofcourse, but I'm glad that they canceled it because it was wrecking the SRT name. Unless they were planning on stuffing a viper V10 under it's hood, then it shouldn't have the SRT badge.
Same thing with GM. They used the badge on the wrong vehicles. None of the vehicles currently deserve the badge. What they should do it make a Collorado SS, by stuffing a LS6 under the hood, with a 6spd tranny. That would be worthy. A supercharged ecotec motor in a compact car? Please... GM needs to go either balls out or nothing. GM needs to drop in a supercharged V6 atleast.
i don't like the SS badge on a front wheel drive car i guess. having power is great (even though its only 50 over stock), but when you can't use it because torque steer rips the steering wheel from your hands, its kind of useless.
GO PATS!!!
^^ then they got the dodge caliber srt4
I do have to admit though, the cobalt ss doesnt really put out THAT much hp, 205hp frm a s/c 2.0L ecotec. I persoanlly would have expected atleast 220 ... but ... it does get 30+mpg YAY!!!
dan
seriously guys have you driven next to a trailblazer SS?!
when its floored that thing makes it sound like the end of the world is coming out of its exhaust pipe
i love that vehicle

Dodge has an SRT model for almost their entire line.
