What GM says about it... .
GM Statement Regarding NHTSA Rulemaking on Electronic Stability Control
Attributable to Bob Lange, Executive Director, Structure and Safety Integration
"General Motors supports rulemaking on electronic stability control and we commend Administrator Nason for moving quickly on the issue.
"As evidence of ESC effectiveness grew, we committed in January 2005 to make ESC standard in all our retail products by the end of the decade. The technology is on about half our products today and will be standard on our new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks this fall.
"Getting the public familiar with how StabiliTrak works has been a focus of a nationwide safety tour this summer in which we have offered hundreds of demonstration ride and drives. Almost to a person, people are amazed at what this technology does.
"Today's announcement is proposed rulemaking open to comment. We will adjust our timing as needed to satisfy a final rule when issued".

I don't remember, but what were the goals for GM on safety + security?
Was it all models were going to have ABS, ESC, and OnStar within a few years or something like that?

Well GM ESC is going be standard in all their vehicle by 2010. Ford will have it all by 2009.
About a year ago, GM wanted Onstar to on all their vehicles by 2009, I believe.
Back in the 90s it was the DRLs by 1996 and ABS by 2000. But Lumina's base model was optional and so was it on the 2003 base Js and forward. So GM contradicted themselves there. (?)

The thing that scares me about a system like this is that people will put too much trust into it. They were talking about it this morning on the radio and they made a comment that it could have prevented a recent pileup on the highway. The average human out there will not realize that it is basically a skid control it's not a magic accident avoidance system. There are already studies out there that are saying that people feel very safe in cars thees days and are "less careful" since they feel so safe. Thing about it if you drove a car that would explode if crashed you would probably be pretty cautious while driving.
