I'm going to be buying a 2001 Camaro Z28 (SS if I could find one) 6-speed T-top. I'm going to be buying a 2001 because It has more hp than a 2000 and is not a 25th annaversary which is a 2002. I just don't want to get a 25th and do the mods to it. I'd wait for a 2009, but I just love the way the 4th generations look. So, my question is this: What's your thoughts on a 2001? What do you like and dislike about it? But regardless, I'm going to be buying one end of this year or beggining of next year. Than, about 25-30 years later, a Corvette. Just some thoughts about what you think about the 2001. Oh, and what should I pay special attention to when buying a 2001 Camaro. Thanks.
First... Awesome car all around.
Dislike: The last spark plug on the left/rear. PIA to change. I highly recommend the SLP socket for that one.
What to look for.? If you are looking for a T-top, check the seals. Although the powertrain is strong, listen to odd mechanical engine noises, as these cars are performance cars and get dogged. But you may be lucky and find one that was babied.... Luck of the draw.
Good luck

02 was 35th anniversary. I wouldn't worry too much about the year...
I know the 01-02's got the ls6 intake, but other than that I think they are pretty much the same.
Check the oil, and ask if it uses any oil(good luck getting a good answer with that) I've heard of some ls1's that burn oil
Check to see if the rearend makes a whining noise while driving(it may make the whining noise anyway because some aftermarket gears are noisy) but if it's stock it's probably the 10 bolt on it's way out.
Check out www.ls1tech.com for info and research
What kind of price are you looking at? I would say GTO.
but I am kind of biased. lol
I would go for the z28 but either way you will enjoy it.
01s had an upgraded clutch line if I am not mistaken along w/ other minor improvments over the previous year.

I know this is a Chevy site, but give the 99/01 Cobras a look. They close to the same speed, excellent handling, great pricing since the 03's got released, and just are nice cars.
Just a thought. I know I love my 99 Cobra, and love LSx's too.
O noes!
bleh 99/01 cobras wont hold a candle to the camaro.

get the z28 and swap an ss cam in it.
their only about 25 hp apart anyway
happy happy joy joy

Theres no such thing. An LS1 from any camaro is the same.
^^^^ depending on the year. some had a little bit different cam specs, but nothing radical.
Those are sweet! I love the camaros.
I'd love a good muscle car too. The Mustangs are nice, but the Camaros really seem to have the upper edge. They just have a nicer feeling interior to me. I don't know what it is, but I just fit them better than a stang.
In my search, it seems that Firebirds generally are babied more, and Camaros seem to be more abused by their owners. Don't know why. Everyone with a Camaro in my city winter drives them, while the Firebirds get garaged.
Try to get an 01 or 02 because they have an ls6 intake and you wont have to buy one later, Also if your gonna mod it stick to a z28 since its lighter and it won't cost as much and the money you save can go into mods.

In what respect? Speed? Build quality? Ride?
There's a good amount of 99/01 Cobra's running low 13's. That's only a couple of tenths slower than the fastest stock LS1 f-bod that I've heard of.
O noes!
Everything.
If youre going to buy a Mustang buy a Terminator.
No ifs ands or buts ... that is *THE* only mustang even worth looking at if we're discussing LS1 territory.
As for swapping in an SS cam ... what type of mickey mouse 'ish is that?
No. Just ... No.
Good ol' TSP 228R or TR 230/224 will do the trick just fine ... 380-410hp, N/A cam-only. Cam costs $350 and associated mods (springs, pushrods) another $400. If youre going to do a cam swap, you may as well upgrade ... the differnece between stock cams is tiny.
Another quick question. Does the Camaro have a push button traction control like the 'Vette does? I searched the web, but found nothing. Keep forgetting to look for the button when I do look into a Camaro.
Also, thanks to all who have responded to my question. So far, it has realy been helping me out.
TCS is an option.
If it is on the car, then you will have the ability to disengage it with a button.
Camaro's are great cars. I personally would go with the SS....for collector reasons. But LS1 engines are simply bad @$$. If you decide to go with the stang.....like stated above get nothing less than the 03/04 cobras. I was in the same boat as you I was looking at SS vert camaro's and 03/04 Cobra verts. I decided to hold off and invest my money in a rental property with my business partner a.k.a my brother. Good luck and keep us posted.
"Remember do what you like because you have to drive it."--Me
My friend has a 98 T/A and i cant get enough of it....pulls like a mother and handels nice too....they do consume a little bit of oil but nothing crazy, there is no such thing as an SS cam...they all have the same motor, can remember the exact year they fixed it but the oil pumps would fail on the LS1's...i think they fixed it in the 2000 model year so you should be fine with that....as said above...look for the normal car stuff that could go bad...rear end whine...obvious things like that.
good luck and have fun with it....you'll love it
Can I add a TCS to a Camaro if the one that I buy dosen't come with one?
Ive never heard anyone ask that question ... and I am pretty sure the answer is No, however, go to LS1Tech.com and Search/Ask over there.
TCS is fr sally's
-Borsty
Damn Skippy.
When youre putting down ~400 HP ... on Nitto's ... in rain ... Who needs TCS?
I sure dont.
Hitting those on-ramps at a good 50MPH.
First and foremost...
2001 is probably the best year to buy. I say this cuz it doesnt come with the price tag that the 2002's do based on the fact that its NOT a anniversary edition.
-01/02's got LS6 Intakes.
-SOME 01/02's got LS6 BLOCKS.
-01/02's have a better Clutch Master & Slave cylinder (i would still perform the drill mod though if I were you)
-01/02's dont have an EGR
-01/02's have LS6 oil-pumps
Few other minor differences too, less restrictive exhasut manifolds and stuff like that.
1997-98 LS1 Corvette's and 1998 LS1 F-Bodys were the 'problematic' ones, where people would claim oil-pump failure, etc. This wasnt the oil pump but infact an oil-starvation problem found in only EXTREME situations, which led to the block being updated for the 1999 models years. This means all 1999+ Model years have strong engines.
For some reason 1998 & 2001-02 are the only years to get 28/lb-hr injectors, 99 & 00 got 26 lbs.
Any more questions, ask.
