Hood Release Broke, Now what?
Thursday, August 31, 2006 9:01 PM
Hey Everyone,

The hood release on my 85 CRX just broke today. Does anyone know of any tricks to get a hood open after this has happened?

Thanks

Can you get to the latch from under the front bumper? If so, start pulling it the way the release cable pulls it, I hope that helps

It's pretty much the same idea. The hood latch is mounted on the front of the radiator support rail, and the cable comes into the bottom of the latch assembly from the driver's side, right along the rail. The release lever that the cable pulls is fully exposed on the bottom side of the latch.

On older cars like that, a lot of the splash guards and such underneath are probably missing and you MAY be able to get to it just by reaching up behind the bumper, straight up to the latch. If it's got A/C the condensor fan might get in your way though.

If you can't get to it directly like that, the bumper can be taken off quite easily. First, disconnect the bumper turn signal lights (if your model has them) and unscrew any splash guards that are attached to the bumper cover from underneath. Then there are two bolts, one on each side of the grill, that you access from underneath. The sides are held in place by a bolt that fits in a slot on the bumper cover. A little jimmying and that will come loose and the whole bumper will come off by just pulling forward. That should give you plenty of room to reach up to get to the latch.
