Keeping the trend...no more cavy!
Tuesday, August 29, 2006 3:11 PM
well, i seem to be one of many lately.

i got rid of my cavalier on sunday evening.

i did an 800 mile road trip last week while on vacation. my 2002 z24 sedan overheated twice, lost its fuel level sender, averaged 24mpg, and rattled to the point where even my wife wanted the radio up loud so she couldn't hear it.

i've been looking at toyota tacoma's for a long time. we got home saturday night and went to the toyota dealership sunday morning just to "look." i test drove the brand new tacoma's and didn't really like them. it drove fine but its too bulky. as i was about to leave, i spotted an 02 tacoma extended cab with the TRD offroad package. i talked the dealership from $18,995 DOWN to $16,500. i then talked the dealership from $4000 UP to $6000 on a trade in for my car. with zero down and just the trade in, it made my monthly payments $243. i also talked in a 7year/100,000 mile warranty. that was enough to seal the deal.

i already miss my cavalier, but i LOVE my truck. i wanted a truck to begin with, but bought what i could afford. now i'm happy.

i'll have pictures as soon as my wife gets home with the digital camera.

GO PATS!!!

i doubt you got rid of it because it overheated. . . .i say its the millions of window motors you have switched on it

that could damn well be too. i forgot to mention that i changed 3 window motors so i could roll windows down at the beach.

and speaking of the beach....when i walked back up to the car, the alarm wouldn't chirp to disarm...no idea what happened. i shaked, jiggled, slapped the remote...nothing. i popped the trunk with the key (not attached to the alarm) and then slammed it and the alarm chirped, so i knew the car battery wasn't dead. i got pissed and threw the remote. wife picked it up, shook it, and hit the button. of course, it disarmed.

i screamed lemon for a long time...if i listed every trip to the dealer it'd take forever...i'll just list the majors.

besides the 7 window motors the dealer replaced....

--it was in the dealership every month for the first year because i was only getting 18MPG. they kept telling me the car "just needed to be broken in." I finally smelled gas one day and found a leak at the fuel rail.

--it was at the dealership twice because when i went to park the car it wouldn't engage in park. i had to leave it in nuetral and pull the parking brake to get it to stay. both times it was the same thing, the shift cable was hitting the exhaust and melting the wiring (or so they tell me). they replaced the cable the first time but left it in the same spot. low and behold, 4 months later, same problem. they finally got smarted and rerouted the cable.

--blew two CV joints in 3 months...don't know how. they hassled me about replacing them saying that i "was driving recklessly." both times they replaced them for free.

--replaced the cat at 30k miles

--replaced the radiator at 37k miles. i threatened to call lemon if they didn't replace it for free, so they gave me a "good faith" repair cuz my car was out of warranty.

thats just the mechanical stuff. i had a few electronic problems too but i won't get in to them. i would have called lemon if i didn't love my car so much. good thing i grew out of it.

woohoo for toyota!! just found the first thing i hate about the truck.

cavalier+$35 fill up=28MPG
tacoma+$48 fill up=22MPG

cavalier>tacoma for gas
tacoma>cavalier for everything else

either you're very good at negotiating or the folks at that Toyota
dealership were ultra cool.

I tried to buy a 2002 bmw 325xi this week. They haven't been able
to move it off their lot for 2 months now (it's a KIA dealership... it's
not like people go there to look for entry-luxury sport-sedans lol).
The car was 25k. I offered 22k. When the sales guy went to pitch
my offer to the owner... he stormed out of his office and accused
me of trying to "steal" a car from him. I mean WTF !!!??

i'm pretty good at talking. i got my cavalier from a dealer sticker price of $21, 400 down to $14,500 out the door.

i've just always been good at talking.

my car buying tips:

i make sure i know everything there is to know about a vehicle before i buy it. if you can, get a price list (can't remember the website, but you can find them online) of what the DEALER pays for the vehicle. you can also find price lists for what the dealer pays for each option as well. that makes it really easy to negotiate cuz you can just add up exactly what you want and give them a little over. also, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS buy a vehicle at the END of the month. EVERYONE(sales and management) is trying to make their quote for the month so they just THROW deals at you.

and the reason i got so much for my cavy is cuz i kept telling them that i couldnt buy the truck yet cuz i had a buddy trying to get together $6500 for my car. i told them i was just pricing and that when he had the cash, i'd drive down and give them the cash and sign the cavalier to my buddy...

you have to remember, dealership are crooks...so just be more of a crook and you can win.

Nice buy. I'm looking at getting a brand new Tacoma come spring. I'm looking just for a single cab, 4 cyl, 4x2. A nice daily driver.. I don't need the 4x4, otherwise I'd get the TRD as well!!

Get us pics as soon as you can.
