Least Safe American Car

Saturn Ion coupe and sedan

Base price: $12,490

The Ion is the only American car to have the worst Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash-test scores in its weight class and a "substantially worse [i.e., higher] than average" frequency of injury claims filed, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute. On its Web site, the HLDI states that "vehicles with high death rates often have high frequencies of insurance claims for occupant injuries."

its a pretty even split with the "big 3"

of course its split on the big 3...worst AMERICAN cars....that pretty well singles out the big 3...now how do our worst compare to everyone else's worst? and half of those vehicles are fleet vehicles of some sort, and not many foreign cars are bought in fleet so the comparison is crap and would compare apples to oranges anyways

What a load of crap...

Who writes these kinds of articles? No wonder why American cars have such a bad reputation. With the American press writing garbage like this, who needs enemies?

How do they come up with 10 cars? Many are duplicates, platform-wise. The Crown Vic and the Grand Marq are on the same platform. Same with the four GM minivans, only ONE of which will survive into the new year.

They called a van, an SUV and a pickup truck cars... Then they lambaste these heavy duty vehicles because they don't get 50 MPG? Do the writers not realize these are heavy duty vehicles, some built to a purpose(i.e. the Econoline or the Sprinter)?

Where are the comparison to the creaky Toyota Camrys, the stunningly average gas mileage Prius' or the catch-on-fire-from-oil-leaks Nissan Sentras?

The bad thing is, car people know the difference.

But some 'allegedly' educated person will read that list and just assume that all American cars are crap.

Stuff like this just irritates the living sh*t out of me.

the most important crash test ratings are not even on there
side impact is possibly the most important, as well as offset, because most major accidents will not have head on collisions

with the cobalt...its a five star with sides (leader in its class , yes, ahead of the f*m civic and camery) and w/o side bags its a 4 star (2nd in its class)

those lists are total bull@!#$

Re: Ouch 10 sh**est vehicles of 2006

Umm no.
Check and see how all of GM's small cars scored with "safety concerns" or low stars for the critical side impact.
http://www.safercar.gov/Index2.cfm
Check here
That these Deltas are no class leader as you all love to put it.
http://www.iihs.org/ratings/summary.aspx?class=40

Some pictures to look.

Now I'm in no way a supporter for BS crash rating, because you'll never going to have a crash at a set speed or that angle etc, there are to many variables.
One thing is for sure all three suffered amount of cabin damage, granted the Cav tested is a 1995 and in its ten years it has gone through some changes on its cabin stucture, seatbelts and airbags.
Overall to say one is safer then the other is utter stupidity, because when the day comes (god forbid) a person may die in a "5 star" and the other may walk away in a 1 star car. It all depends on your destiny.
