Okay.. so, I get a 86.5 MKIII Supra Turbo on friday... It's rough as hell (on account of being a winter driven car every year for almost 20 years)...
This is gonna be AWESOME...
Okay, seriously, I plan to get the car safetied and a few other things (replace front seats, install a CD/iPod capable Stereo Amp, speakers and sub, fix some minor things), and that's about it for now.
I've already found out about Supra Forums, Can anyone recommend a good tech site for this model of Supra?
(I'm not going to go ape sh!t with mods immediately, although, I may just dooo eeeet and blow my budget for the next 3 years
)
Thanks ahead of time folks!

I thought your car was a supra for a second.
"
boobs now with Riboflabin"
i want a supra too. post up some pics when you get it
You can't.
"SM" doesn't quite have the same ring to it...
now i'm no expert with Supras but from what i've heard from most people is that a better forum to join is:
www.SupraMania.com
All I've heard about Supra forums is that everyone complains a whole bunch and always says that their car can beet everyone else's. I dunno, like I said, i'm no expert but the site I posted is definetly worth checking out.
GAM ... dont it man.
Dont do it.
MKIIs and MKIIIs are total money pits.
I know you are hype'd about the new car and want to start modding stuff and 'ish ... but look at this objectiveyl ... youre wasting money, man.

Yes, JinxedZ is right, they are money pits. Although take a look at the one my buddy just picked up:
Mmm.....1JZ......Twin Turbo........lol.....

Okay.. First off, Jinxed: It's already done. On top of that, the car is FREE, all I have to do is pay GST and plate it.
Second, it's not going to get crazily modded... I'm not going to try and slap down 2 brazillian HP and run negative 3 second ET's (yes, finish the race 3 seconds before it starts... no Vtec, yo). The most optimistic I'm going to get with it is dumping the stock suspension (with TEMS) and putting in Tein with some good anti roll bars, polyurethane or polycarbon bushings, and maybe putting a Quaife or KAAZ LSD in the rear (but that's for next year). Beyond that, if I decide to go above and beyond, it's going to have to have major surgery, and I don't have the money for that currently.
3rd, I won't change to SM (the Kilted One), I've been GAM (or Grand Am Matt) since about 2001 or so... I might use my original Screen names, periodically, but War Forum wouldn't look the same without "Transeat In Exemplum" and the Minister of Silly Walks. Plus, I've been without a GA for the last year and a half. I didn't change it to AleroMatt or AM, or when I had my Golf I wasn't GM.
To put it simply, well,
4th, if I REALLY wanted to make it go like stink, I'd do the 2JZ and one huge ass f**k of a turbo build up... and I'd get the motec exhaust too. 24" rims are go fast goodies too right?
Seriously, if I had to buy it, I'd pass because it is pretty rough, it's got some rust issues, and the black trim is pretty badly chopped up.... In a little while, I'll get the rust repaired and have it properly repainted (either factory white or Honda Championship White with either Carizzma or a little more blue in the paint, I was thinking the Midnight blue in the paint the Aveo post, but that's probably going to be a little too much coin for my budget... I'd really love to have a shoestring budget). Seriously, the car is rough, but it's a project.

Gam, it may be free, but what people are trying to tell you is that its going to cost you more and more in maintaince. You want to do an engine swap, big turbo, new exhaust, etc? Congrats, you just spent over $5K. My friend used to own an MKIII, and it was a fun little car, until just out of the blue it threw a rod going 60mph . . . That was the problem with those Supra's, they looked great and were fun, but weighed a lot (if yours has that "tems suspension", and cost a lot to maintain.
Props to you though, wish I owned a Supra, lol
7M 's are money pits. you throw a 1jz in there and you're fine! i know the supraforums club in toronto meets every first friday of the month . not sure how it is in ottawa. but they are super helpfull when it comes to problems with your car. one of the mods of the toronto supra club has a mean ass mark III with something like a T72 on a 7M. it's purdy.

Exodus: No, I don't want to go with anything (this year) other than fix the exhaust, get it safetied and plated. Read what I said a weeee bit more carefully.
The most optimistic thing I'm looking to do this year is get a new CD HU and speakers and my sub in, take care of the rust, and replace the front seats. All that other stuff was a joke
If I wanted to take it to the level of being a show-car or a track car, then, I'd be putting a lot more time and effort, and do it right: strip the car down totally, paint and all at a chemical stripper, fill the interior cavities with urethane, etc... Build it up from the bottom to the top to be bloody indestructable (OKAY, I'd even consider shoe-horning in an LS2 into it, just to keep Jinxed happy).
The other thing to consider is that this is not going to be a daily driver... it's basically going to be something that I can work on a bit at a time, and not lose my primary transportation.
I don't really care if it's heavy, I don't drive like my ass is on fire anyhow...

Good to hear man ....
I know youve been looking for a new whip for awhile, Im just glad you didnt go out and drop $$$$ on this hoping to make it a super tight JDm race car.

Oh . . . Maybe I should've read it a bit more carefully, lol. Sorry about that :-(
Exodus: No worries man
Jinxed: I'm still planning on getting a G35 in a year, and then a Camaro in the next 3-4 years, but that will depend on what I'm doing in my Job situation... There's still some uncertainty where I'm in the RCMP, and I've been applying to other places in the Gov't in the IT/IS/IM field, and the pay rates are substantially higher.
It's still up in the air.
(Don't worry, I still LOVE the 70's Firebirds with the 455 Superduty
(that's a REAL Pontiac Engine), 4th gen f-bods and the new GTO's... The General isn't far from my heart)

The Mk3 is no less of a money pit then any other car, F-bodies included. Granted, compared to a 2JZ supra, its not nearly as rife with potential but the 7M is a decent motor nonetheless.
GAM, PJ(AKA The Flying Skwirl) just recently sold his Mk3, he had done a fair share of research on them, and from what I know he stuck to Supra forums pretty heavily. There's also 7MPower.com but i think thats more of an honor roll for the highest hp 7M's than it is a forum. Look him up I'm sure he'd be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
First thing to do though is to retorque the head bolts to the appropriate spec. Toyota's initial specs at the factory were wrong, and they didn't torque them down tight enough, which is why the 7M became known for headgasket issues. I've heard from numerous sources that the stock gasket is actually pretty tough, but like any hg, will fail if its not compressed enough.
Just one question.... who the hell uses a turbo rwd 5spd as a WINTER BEATER in CANADA?

LowFire: Yeah, I'm still holding out hope that Transport Canada will cert the GTO, but if not, there's still the 15 year exception. I'll get it when I'm about to turn the big 43 or so... Either way, If not that, then a Camaro or whatever the Poncho equivalent will be.
Scarab: thanks for the forum lead
I'll Definitely check that out!
The car has already had the head gasket and entire head replaced (remanufatured IIRC, I'm going to get the full run-down from Kelly's dad), one of the first things I think I'm going to do is get the HKS copper head gasket I remember seeing a while ago. Either way, it's running now, I'm just going to go easy on it for now.
Oh, Kelly's dad didn't use it as a winter beater, it's his daily driver, in the winter he would only drive on nicer days and use my other car if it was really bad. It's also got one other little deficciency: it's an auto.

I'd drop a B16 and convert to FWD. It's the only way to go with Supras of any bodystyle. Fo sho!
Put some pics up, GAM. You know you can't talk about a new car without visuals. Otherwise I can't keep my attention. I need pics! I like spegetti. Did I put the broom back. Ack, ADD kicking in again!

also look at 7mpower.com. I have an MKIII alos and yes they are money pits, fun to drive, pretty quick but they cost alot. I got mine for a steal too and have put a crap tone of money into stocking up on parts for a massive engine oeverhaul. It should be done sometime in the next year to year and a half and if all goes well i should be able to put down 450hp with about 5-6K spent and thats with me doin all the work.
