S2000 ....simply amazing!
Thursday, July 06, 2006 10:35 AM
My buddy came down from Michigan a few weekends back and he brought his Honda s2000. All I have to say is WOW! If I had the money I would pick one up. The one bad thing is that it is very small inside. Im 6 foot 1inches tall and 185lbs and I fit nice and snug in it. To really feel the power you have to drive it at high rpms. If you have a chance I totally recommend to drive one around! I have driven the pontiac solstice and I would have to stick with the honda. Enjoy the pics.

eh, im not a big fan of S2Ks. expecially after running a few. you'd think a 3000lbd car with 240 horse would get up and move a little better. in their defense, though, they do handle pretty well. not big on the styling either, i'd rather have a solsice GXP or skyline redline. but im somewhat GM biast. if i were to own a honda, it'd be as a DD, and this would be completely impractical for that. maybe that's why i've never thought about owning one

Love it too. Engineering at it's finest. One of my top 5 cars i'd own today. Quick and powerful for being a 2.2L (237hp/162tq). Nice power band, and you feel the 50/50 weight distribution.
Lots of smiles with that car.

I would love to have a used S2000, but even the used ones are in the teens as far as pricing goes. I can't justiy having another car payment for a car I would only drive on nice days

That is an unfair comparison. Price-wise the S2000 would be comparable with a Solstice GXP or Sky Redline. Go test drive one of those and then tell us what you think of the S2000. It is also important to note, since you mentioned the interior volume of the S2000, the Solstice/Sky is bigger in every interior measurement. You would fit better in a Solstice then an S2000.

i like them, i mean the are the definition of a sports car, but, i would need something more impressive for a car that is so impractical

By far my favorite Honda, even though I am FWD bias for Auto X (only thing I have a lot of experiance in). I had so much fun in those cars. I remember this one guy came in with a c/o VTEC not kicking in. I kept telling him that you had to let the car warm up, but he swore he did. I got to beat that car for like a week. He kept brining it back. We went out for rides and he would beat it worse then I did. But, I digress...

Great handling, great power (although the hp curve is a little high), great everything. I love those cars, especially with the optional hard top. Nothing looks better then a S2K with it's top down though. Kinda has that snake look to it. A+ in my book.

if you hold that car and the corvette in the same class, you're crazy.
the corvette is a sports car. the viper is a sports car. the ford GT is a sports car (slash supercar, so i guess that one's kinda unfair)
i guess what im saying is that you could consider the S2000 as a sports car (light weight, somewhat quick, good weight ratio, wonderful handling, good weekend fun on the twisties) but i wouldnt consider it THE definition of a sports car. maybe a decent example

there is one thing you guys are missing. yes an s2000 is in comparable to price with a gxp, but the gxp is turbo??? and its only making around 30 more HP. im mean cmon. a turbo vs a NA I want to see a bigger gap then that.

people complain about the power band because its not a getup and go car. there nicknames are the toqureless wonders. which really shouldnt of been a suprise I mean those things redline at like what 8g's. so yes the gxp is better but its a whole different motor. I would imgaine there sutiable for much different uses.

It is the definiton of a sports car to me, that i have been brought up to believe, is a small, two-seater, no roof, low-to-the-ground, nimble, and quick automobile. the corvette and viper are muscle cars and the GT can be put in the exotic car class.
in conclusion, the s2000 is in the same catergory as a MG or miata, not a corvette IN MY OPINION.

it has wat 80 ft lbs more?

yeah what a tiny power difference, and seeing the s2k is a higher cr too.

But what you are missing is *one hundred* lb-ft more torque, and a power band that is about 3000rpm lower. So its turbo, it'll still smoke an S2000 something fierce off the line, and has an engine that is just as upgradeable if not more (I think by now you will have realized that the Ecotec has more them proven itself as a tuner engine).

Don't get me wrong, the S2000 is a great piece of engineering. It's just been bested by the Kappa in a few categories.

SO GM is damned for building a turbo car that is faster/ more powerful than another companies larger N/A motor. Im sure if it was TOYOTA it would be fine.

And for the records a sports car should have a roof. This is a roadster more than a sports car. And the viper and vette are far from muscle cars.

Except in one important section... trunk. S2k has more to begin with. Put down the top on both and tell me what you can fit in the Kappa.

Overall GM here tried and made a good attempt to make a roadster but it trails to its competition. If and when the Kappa-2 comes out, I will bet it will be better executed as the kinks will be adressed.

And in terms of engine on the S2000. What does GM offer with in displacement, N/A & 4cyl.

Lets start with the S2K's
2.2L
237HP @7800
162@ 6800
Redlines to 8000
CR 11.1:1

GM's L61
2.2L
140-145HP @5600
145-155TQ @4000
Redlines 6500
CR 10.1:1

GM's LE5
2.4L
167-177@ 6300-6600
162-166 @ 4800-5000
Redlines 7000
CR 10.4:1

Unfortunatly GM's N/A I-4 struggles to make power even though it to has VVT high CR, the latest in computer engineering and the BS of "race proven technology" that GM loves to advertise. Hell... GM needs 2.4L to make the torque that Honda's 2.2L spits out.
And even though two comparible cars will be neck and neck in lower rev band (thanks to gearing), here Honda will charge on while GM's will fall in its face in the upper rev range.
If you ever driven the S2K you will feel the same power as any typical N/A 4cyl from GM, but once in the upper rev band, it feels as if it is F/I with out a turbo or S/C being there.
For the sheer size of the of this I-4(Honda's), it makes good torque and outrageous power levels. And it gets the job done.

Now the LNF is different beast, we will have to wait on Honda's turbo official numbers to compare. And that right there, is jewel of an engine... LNF that is.

Nice cars!
