out of curiousity......how binding is the purchaase order that you sign before buying a new car?

I don't think they can force you to buy the vehicle unless you actually signed papers for a loan, but read the fine print. If you have signed one and you don't want to buy the vehicle anymore, try telling the financing office that you want some ridiculously low interest rate or the deal is off.
If you haven't signed one, but you plan on signing one for a vehicle you are interested in, tell them to put on there that the deal is contigent on a mechanical inspection. Then you can pretty much bring it back (within an agreed upon time period) if it has something wrong with it.
Also check the dealership policies. I just bought a vehicle and I had a 3 day window where I could return it for a full refund no questions asked.
if you have put no money down, and have not taken out a loan, tell them you don't want it and stop answering the phone.
