Car & Driver July 06. Same track, same day as the Vette.

GT-500 $41,950.00

0-60 - 4.5
1/4 - 12.9 @ 112
3896 lbs.

Corvette (NOT the Z06) $44,490.00

0-60 - 4.3
1/4 - 12.8 @ 113
3280 lbs.

Found this on LS2GTO.com and I am NOT impressed

GM > Ford

Corvette costs $3000 more, weighs 600 less, and only runs 1/10th faster.

id say for a 3800 lb car that is pretty dam good

loose the extra 800lbs , and that car will fly

Re: GT500 Tested

But I thought the GT500 was supercharged. Is it? If so then its a supercharged turd! At this point its all about wind resistance and aerodynamics. The Vette is like an arrow tip where the Mustang is like a brick and this makes a big difference. The Mustangs are pretty tho.

Yeah, I think it is blown. But, then again, the Corvette has a bit more displacement.

Yeah, remember this is the 5.4l SC GT500 with 500hp

And that is the Corvette with a 6.0l N/A with 400hp

And that price is just the MSRP, dealerships already have people lining up willing to $20K over that

Again, GM > Ford

Also, I think the Pusstangs (all of the newer retro crap) is ugly to boot

Haha, silly LowFire.

If people are willing to spend $20K over MSRP for a Ford car, how does that mean GM > Ford?

Re: GT500 Tested

last i heard GT500 hp was dropped to 450, then raised to 475, but never made it back up to 500. they're using a roots syle blower rather than a twin screw blower, hence the output drop. but still, being blown it should have better power curves.

and lowfire, i agree. the new stangs just arent to my liking.

the replacement for displacement is boost. you all know that

Nice as hell, but in my opinion, the true mustang name ended in 1973, they just havent been the same since then

Re: GT500 Tested

Yea there is no way that can be right. The 03/04 Cobras run that time STOCK and they only are rated at 390hp. I think Car and Driver needs to learn how to drive. Hell, bolt on 05 Mustang GT's run better times than that. In no way can that be right, at all.

'03-'04 cobras hp was under rated. seems like a fesable time to me. they're heavy little critters. almost 4K lbs. i'll give ford this, pushin a 3900lb car to under 13 seconds stock is a decent acheivement. and if you look at it, if they could get some more traction off the line it'd probably get a better 1/4. put DR's on that and there should be some impressive numbers.

i have a few questions on the GT500, though. anyone know what size tire they're goin with? and is ford putting it's shatty IRS in it again, or did they do the right thing and stick with a solid axle setup?

and Meckster, would you rather they had stuck with "mustang II" or should they have modified it to "pinto stang"

Looks to be more of a "preview test" article, then again I have not seen it.
I still say...
GM's V8s > Ford's V8s

Can't wait on the next gen GM V8s.

The GT500 went back to the retarded live axle, not an IRS

And I believe they will most likey have 275s in the rear like they have been

Re: GT500 Tested

lowfire, for GM, yes, an IRS is a good choice, but fords IRS's are reputable for... well, being crap. a friend of mine broke a half shaft stock, with stock tires. you cant put slicks on them or you'll break one. their wheel hop is terrible. i'd actually rather they go back to the live axle.

and, though 275's are a decent sized tire, it's not enough meat to get a car that big with that much power moving.

and yes, goodwrench, i agree. GM's "low tech old fassion" pushrod engines are, IMO, better than fords new fangled "high tech" engines. but then again, im partial to one cam.

I believe GM fixed the problem with axle hop for 2006 on on the CTS-V.
And no problems here with my IRS.

haha, point taken. but GM's always been a little ahead of ford in their IRS development. just kinda glad to see they didnt use the old IRS.
