it really depends on a lot man. You want new or used? Going used you can prolly get a "GOOD" older bike for around 2k. New really depends they range from 6k - 13k on the popular models.

i suggest just looking up bikes from teh major manufactures, then go from there. ie. honda, kawasaki, suzuki, yamaha.

check your local newspaper classifieds, drive around and see if there are any bikes sitting around with for sale signs on them... etc.

you should be able to get a '96 or so 600cc bike for around 2 grand.

do all the reading you can here: gixxer.com
learn as much as you can before getting a bike, take a rider saftey course. its better to learn slow than to die fast.

Yeah the 2 or 350cc Kawasaki Ninjas are a popular starter bike, also the Buel blast can often be found with like 200 miles a year or two old for 2500 bucks.

If you get right into a basic 600 you will probably be looking for a Honda CBR F2, cheap and popular, or an early Suzuki Katana, Yamaha YZF, and so on. Those are all popular, like said above take a riders course and be careful until you learn the ins and outs.

If you care at all Buells are the only American made sport bike!! (/end shameless plug)
