check out clubgp.net. the 3800 is a pretty stout motor but you can't just start dropping pulley sizes without supporting mods. make sure you have some way to scan for kr (knock retard)...

Don't, actually.

The cars are pretty stout with no real problematic areas.

Tranny is strong.
Motor is strong.

Just look for the normal signs of abuse or neglect.

Wheels are a pain in the a#$. While many insist 114.3 will fit the 115 bolt patern. I just won't do it. 115 by 5 wheels are few and far between.

I own a 03 GP GT 3.8 not a GTP though, fully loaded. and is very strong... I'd say get one... Try to stay away from the color black.. black is hard to keep the swirl marks and scratches out of.. unless you plan on buffing it alot or keeping it in a garage or something along those lines.

00 is the last year for the performance shift

you can add the button and wires to make the performance shift fuction

they are very good cars , like anything the older or higher milage will have some issues

my g/f got a 97 with 56,000 miles for a resonable price , the only big issue with the 97 is no trac control , 98-03 are pretty similar

low 14's are pretty easy to reach with a few mods and some good tuning

go for it!
(you all knew i would say that)

tell that to my poor tranny
im puttin down more power than you will for a while, though, so you'll be far beyond safe with the 4t65E-hd

damn straight it is. two 9 second cars on stock bottom ends. putting down somewhere around 700 horse.

yep

yes, wheels are hard to find. the 4.5 x 5 bold pattern on mustang rims (114.3mm) will fit, and im getting ready to do so, but you have to be careful.

yes, but it wont do anything unless you buy an aftermarket PCM. they're actually pretty cheap, though.

... i like coups better, but if you're in need of a 4 door, then i understand. back seat room's the exact same. pleanty of space. but accesibility's of course not the best with a coup.

Re: looking in buying a GTP

i'd say fwi (fenderwell intake), bigger downpipe, and a custom tune (dhp or the like) will net you some decent gains.

i just drove my friend's gtp tonight (fwi, dhp, 3"dp, 3" exhaust, intercooler, 3.0 pulley, 1.85 rockers) and i will say you should buy one... you WON'T regret it.

first steps, in this order
scanner. you want to buy a good scanner and always scan your car after each step to see what it gained you KR wise
intake of some type. fenderwell intake or a cold air box intake. do NOT get an open cone in the engine bay
3" downpipe/u-bend delete.
upgraded PCM
3.5"/3.4" pulley. you'll be safer with the 3.5", but the 3.4" will give you an extra pound or two of boost

these usually net mid to low 14's in the quarter, and are usually pretty safe. some people still run these mods with KR, i had about 2* when i was running that setup, but i was on a stock PCM.

At 120 KM/h My tach reads 2000rpm. They are very good on fuel, considerig the size, if your good with the gas pedal. I'm not, so I burn lots of gas. BMW's use fuel too, when your on it.

A scanner should be the first purchase for any FI modder. It's too bad getting that mesage across is like beating your head against a wall. You suggest a scanner and they ask how much HP does that give them.

I know that the earlier year GTP's had some problems('97-'98). But the newer years that your thinking about are all good. My cousin just got a 2000 not to long ago and after a few bolt-ons,( intake, pulley, exhaust) that thing is damn quick.

im cammed running an estimated mid 13's at the track and get 15-17 mpg in town, but i cant keep my foot out of it. i get around 30-32 on the highway, though

'97 GTP's, being the first year, had no traction controll, used a different PCM, and different blower setup on the cars. the blower simply has an extra vacume tree on it, the PCM however was quite a bit different in the way it senses knock and reduces timing because of it, aka KR. '97's are notorious for partial throttle KR (most situations KR only comes at WOT). however, i have never had this problem with my car. the PCM was fixed in '98, and tractino controll was added. '97's also have the coolant overflow located behind the drivers headlight (in the way for all intake boxes, but not FWI's) and a vaccume ball in the fenderwell. you could also get '97's antennaless, like mine .

hey BLWN Z24, how was your launch at the track? im guessin you're already pretty good at launching since you had your s/c Z. just curious
