VW Experts...Help.

Last night I helped a friend change a faulty reverse light bulb in her 2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1.8T. While we were changing the bulbs, we noticed that each "bracket" (on the driver's and passenger's side) that holds the brake/parking lights, turn signal and reverse light bulbs had an additional socket in which an additional light bulb could be placed. As a matter if fact, this socket was the same size and fit as the socket for the reverse light bulbs. We put the bulb in there and tried every light we could but that particular socket did not work. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what that extra light socket on those panels are used for, if any.

If any of the above is confusing, I'll try to re-word what I wrote so that it's more comprehendible.

I have the same thing in my 00 passat and couldn't figure out what it was... but from my understanding, its an optional rear fog light (like the volvos and mercedes have) but I haven't been able to find a switch or anything for mine so if you do find out, let me know... you may want to check out vwvortex.com to see if anyone else knows otherwise... good luck!

Yes its for the rear fog, if you have a euro headlight switch you pull it out twice to turn on the rear fog for fog or rain, its only on one side. You can run some wire for one yourself ,they are way brighter than trun signals and alwas on, scares tailgaters away.

Yup, what they said. You gotta buy a euro switch, which go for like $35us. Install that, and follow the DIY guide. The proper way to do it is to only run 1 light on the rear left side. Some people go for 2, but to me, it just looks like your tailights are stuck on all the time. Be careful you dont get pulled over by some idiot cop who thinks you have a burnt taillight... lol
