Okay, I read somewhere that any JDM vehicle at least 15 years old can legally be imported into Canada. I was wondering if anyone in Canada had some details on this, if it has to be done through a licensed importer, DOT regulations, things like that. Here in the States it's ungodly expensive, an EVO or WRX that costs $5,000 can easily end up costing another $15,000 or more just to get it in the country and licensed. I'm wondering if it's the same hassle in Canada or if they're more leaniant with things. I have a friend in Calgary who can do the import and then once it's been registered in Canada I'm pretty sure it can be resold to me and rigistered here with no problems.
Quite a few 89-90 skylines are getting imported around here...I know it'll cost around $15000 (give or take of course) once all is done. Not sure who brings them in though, sorry...
JCO EAST
Is that on top of the price of the car?
GAM would be the one to ask about this
He has been doing a bit of research on cars he could import into Canadia and knows his stuff
But he will never get his most wanted one......muaaahahahahahaha

I'm after a VR4. The kid I was trying to buy one from passed away last week and I have no idea what's going to happen with the car now. But I've been really wanting a JDM model, and there's a LOT of them in Japan and the UK. They weren't so much of a limited edition there as they were here, and they can be had for dirt cheap if you know where to get them. The hard aprt is getting it past customs and the DOT here, and about the only way is to go through some place like MotoRex, and that takes a lot of coin.
You'll have to check with your state DMV.
I know that we can get the cars into Canada, but from here to there, I don't know.
I believe if the vehicle has an equivalent in the US market, you can get it in provided you get a letter from the manufacturer that the car has completed all of it's assigned recalls, as well as getting a letter from its country of origin that it was not involved in any accident write-off incidents...
Again, check with YOUR DMV about bringing it in, because I've yet to find a state that hasn't got a recall compliance clause for imported vehicles.

For a 91 VR4, in theory, it wouldn't have any problems, since there was a US equivalent. I know that for some cars like the Sylvia, it's harder since the SR20 wasn't offered in that chassis when it was brought here as the 240SX. But in the case of the VR4, the 4G63 was the only motor worldwide. Everything is pretty much the same except it's right hand drive.

GAM, if you truely get a Holden Monaro, I promise on my life that I will make a trip to Canadia just to SIT in it and I would let you drive mine if I could driveyours
Johnny, I assume you are referring to the GTO of japan correct? (that's what I remember the JDM name for the 3000 VR4 was)
................Which car will hit 400 whp first???................
I have no desire to own a GTO. I was never really fond of the 3KGT. I'm referring to the Galant VR4. I can find one here, but I want a RHD version just to be different. One of our friends was stationed in Japan for a while when he was in the Marines, he said that VR4s and old EVOs and such can be had for cheap over there because they're so common since they were a regular production car unlike here. But again, it costs so much to get them brought over, which is why those cars cost $50K or more over here.
I was referring to crash compliance...
Mitsu Gallant, you oughtta be okay as long as the vin will decode out, but again, I cannot stress enough that you need to check with your state DMV about this.
Nissan's Silvia S15 was a problem because the chassis won't meet US/CDN crash specs. S13/180SX and S14 have US equivalents, but you need to swap the front/rear crash members in the case of the S14 IIRC.
LowFire: I'm holding you to that promise.

Hey dudes.
I havent been on jbody org for a good 2 months because I recently imported in a 1990 JDM fairlady twin turbo 2 seater from Japan.
I live in Canada. The car was dirt cheap.
These import companies have such huge mark-ups and profit margins, it makes me wonder why I am not in the same business as them. But, I found an importer with a no bull@!#$ attitude... would rather sell 5 cars with $2000 profits on each, then sell 1 car with $10,000 profit on it.
Basically, I wait 3 months for the car to make it to my door step. When I got it, it was exactly as the pictures showed. It had a turbo timer and intake, which was not indicated when I bought it. So that was a nice bonus.
The car runs and drives great. Doesnt burn oil, doesnt leak oil. FAST AS HELL.
Price tag? I got my 300 horsepower car for $7000 CAN FINAL PRICE TAG (basically $6000 US) .
Now I am not sure how you go about importing in a car to the USA from Canada. I am sure you could find out after makeing a few phone calls to your government. Another factor is, will your insurance company give you coverage if you are right hand drive?
If you ever have any questions....feel free to shoot me an email. I dont come here often anymore, so dont send me a private message. I gave up waiting for a supercharger kit for the ecotec........ after all I got a WHOLE 300ZX with two turbos for roughly the same price.... and I am ALOT faster then a SC eco cav. So I dont wander onto this forum much anymore.
cya dudes
