What other economy cars interest you and why?

I bought my first never car in 2000. It was my 96' Cavalier. It was like new, with Ultra low mileage. I drove it for almost 3 years and the whole time i was under the impression that my car was slow, poorly made, and that anything else was much better.

I ended up selling the cav, and buying an actual sports car, with about twice the power, but it was a few years older with alot more mileage. I also sold that car once it hit 225,000kms.

Since then i have been through 4 other cars. I havent been impressed with any of them except for one.

I'm kinda back at square one, and i want a newer car again. My last car recently got totalled.

I'm looking at car prices and really, 2001 or newer Sunfire seems like the best buy out there. They have great gas mileage, look great, and are affordable to buy.

Just curious what other cars in this class any of you might own or be looking at buying?

I find anything else to be just garbage ( 2001 and up sx 2.0's) or way over priced (2002 and up Lancers)

Honda's interest me just because they are reliable, tons of parts, and excellent gas mileage. The body lines are also pretty nice. I say honda's because I mean like civics, integras, RSX's. (Yea I know those are acura's but still a Honda)

I like the Lancers also but they are real slow, but not too bad looking.

Newer sentra SE R Spec V I also like a lot.

I guess thats about it really. Not many appeal to me as far as newer economy cars.

Oh yea and you could look into a new base model Cobalt. Those can be had pretty reasonable. I like those ok also. Get the Coupe not the sedan.

After working at a Toyota dealsrship for a few years, I have fallen in love with a Corolla, Specifically a Corolla Sport B-pkg, or even better a Corolla XRS, I love the kick at 6800 rpm when the VVTL-i kicks in. Really good on gas, super reliable, excellent build quality, good resale value, and the sport and XRS are not as common as some other cars. Plus they sound awesome with an adtermarket intake on it. But I also Like a Cobalt, cheaper, and still a decent car. Civic's haven't impressed me after the redesign in 2001. 2000 Civic Si Coupe ( It was probably called a Civic EX is the US) were nice cars. Focus ZX3 I drives nice, good fit and finish, but it's still a Ford.

And that's my opinion.

Thanks guys. I dont like Honda's at all. My brother and my gfs Honda's were riddled with electical problems. The SER Sentra is about 3 times the price of an 01-02 sunfire and the Corrolla doesnt seem like a bad choice at all...

I like the Cobalts, but personally, my next daily driver will be more of the boxy car style. I'm thinking either a Caliber or an HHR... That's more what I need and want in my next ride.

hyundai's are becoming the new honda. Making solid cars at a cheap price. Pretty soon their resale value will shoot up. Dodge caliber? Uhhhh no. There is no such thing as a reliable dodge car... few and far between. Toyota/scion is good. Only probably with corolla/camry is if you live in a big city or near one. Watch out for theft. A friend of mine has a TC. For the price and what you get, it's not too bad. Cobalts in my opinion are too bulky and they need to be lowered a little. You should really think about test driving the new civics. The civic you refer to must be a rare exception because everyone i know with a civic has over 100,000 miles. My g/f's has 170,000 and we just drove it to chicago and back and NYC and back without one problem.

Mazda's are questionable. I dunno about the new mazda's but older ones used to be a real pain in the arse to work on.

And overall if you don't care about h/p. Look at the yaris.

Yeah, my Elantra is nice. It's quick, but not much more than that. It's a great, reliable car. There's just nothing.... fun about it. I would recommend it to anyone, as long as the fun factor isn't their only consideration.

Not quite. I myself owned a Dodge Shadow back in the day. Had great luck with it until I decided to buy my Cavalier. I've also known other people to have really good luck with Dodge and Chrysler products. Plus, they've come a long way in recent years in their build quality and reliability.

the S is pretty common around here, but there's a RIDICULOUS aftermarket for it. all the aftermarket people finally listened to us 8th gen folks when we whined, bitched and moaned about the shoddy aftermarket. so, if you go that route, you have people like me to thank for it.

honestly, the XRS isn't a bad deal, despite requiring premium gas for a measly 170HP.

my preference? older Subaru...specifically the 99-01 RS coupe. badass little cars, and they don't have the crappy DOHC motor that's known for headgasket issues. pancake motor FTW!

I'd look into in a nutshell:

Ford Focus: <<Room, stylish, fun to drive for a great price
Honda Civic (2006)<< quality through out, resale, fuel efficiency
Hyundai (any)<< Reliability, value, warranty, well made through out
Mazda 3<< Fun to drive, roomy, superb fit and finish, roomy, attractive styling
Saturn S-series<< solid as a rock, polymer panels, peppy , best ever GM compact
Toyota Corolla<<Resale, quality, peppy, fuel efficient

Im also looking other small cars as well, as I will be buying one in about a year.

I am looking at :
Honda Civic (01-05)
Toyota Corolla (03-06)
Mazda 3

I am looking for something with 4 doors, good gas milage, and with decent storage room. It is going to be something that I will sharing with the boyfriend and we will need enough room to be able to take the dogs to the park, go grocery shopping, luggage room for road trips, etc and will be able to handle putting a lot of miles on.

The most amount of money I am willing to spend is 20k...I plan on putting 5k down.

Other larger options that I have considered have been (used) Pontiac Vibe, Chevy Equinox, and Suzuki Grand Vitara (06). He said he would prefer a large sedan like a Toyota Camry.

Anyone have any other ideas? Any opinions or experiences to share?

I tell ya Steph,

if it was me id grab up a used camry. For what you need it for, probably the best bet. Holds its value and runs forever

Re: What other economy cars interest you and why?

Yeah, he wants a large car and I do think it would be better for our needs, but I just can't see myself driving something that large.

Major thing that interests me in a Camry though, is that I would prefer leather for the sole reason that I can wipe it down if the dogs were to slober or track anything onto the seats.

O and if he mentions getting one of those @!#$ ugly Prius' one more time, Im gonna slap him. (I hope you read this, Karo)

Ill slap him if he mentions it again!

A camry is not that big though. Youd get used to it

Steph, seriously consider either an Elantra or a Sonata. I had a 2003 Sonata with the V6 as a loaner a little while ago, and that car was darn fun. Well built, peppy as heck, and plenty of room. The only problem I had with it was that it had the moonroof, which left me (I'm 6'2") feeling a little crowded in the headroom department. I really like Hyundai, and have actually decided to keep my Elantra for a while longer because it's been such a great little car.

I've been looking at the new Nissan Versas that will be coming out very soon.

CVT automatic, 40+ MPG highway, typical beautiful Nissan Interior, plenty of passenger space...

Only thing that has been scaring me recently is Nissan's questionable unreliability ratings. They were near the bottom with Mercedes Benz and Jeep for 2005.

I read that and thought Saturn SW2 if you are going used.
New... I would look into the Pontiac Vibe / Toyota Matrix.
For small SUV look into the Ford Escape, or Saturn Vue. The Escape has a nice confident ride/handling. The Vue has the option of a Honda V6 which is silky smooth and quick as hell, not to mention reliable too.

eh...for small SUVs, i'd say RAV4. it's really nice now...lots of room, and quite peppy. Toyota's getting a lot of use out of that 4banger camry motor.

Gas milage...Karo and I will be doing a lot of driving, we want something good on gas and that will handle being pounded on.

AND...Here is the catch, he doesn't want an American made car (ie NO GM OR FORD).
