2.0L Ecotec gets a boost from GM Performance Parts' Stage Kits
Performance upgrade kits for Chevy Cobalt Coupe SS Supercharged; Saturn ION Redline
MSRP - Stage One Kit - $500; Stage Two Kit - $750
DETROIT - GM Performance Parts is adding some extra juice to the 2.0L Ecotec-powered Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe SS Supercharged and Saturn ION Redline by introducing two supercharger kits that generate real power gain. The Stage One and Stage Two performance upgrade kits provide an additional 31 and 36 hp respectively.
"These stage kits are aimed squarely at the hard core enthusiast looking to boost the power of the already charged-up 205-horsepower 2.0L Ecotec engine of the Chevy Cobalt Coupe SS Supercharged and Saturn ION Redline," said Nancy Philippart, executive director, GM Accessories. "They deliver increased horsepower and torque throughout the operating range of the engine."
The Stage One Kit (P/N 17801947) with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $500.00, includes higher-flow fuel injectors and an ECU calibration to provide a 31 hp boost to the Cobalt Coupe SS Supercharged and ION Redline Ecotec engine for a total of 236 hp and 205 lb.-ft. of torque.
The Stage Two Kit (P/N 17803229), with an MSRP of $750.00, yields more power through the middle section of the power curve versus the Stage One Kit. The Stage Two Kit includes the parts available in the Stage One Kit and adds a smaller supercharger pulley and drive belt, pushing the engine alive with 241 hp and 218 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad engine speed range.
A Stage One to Stage Two Upgrade Kit (P/N 17803230) is also available for an ION Redline or Cobalt Coupe SS Supercharged with a Stage One performance upgrade kit already installed. This kit converts the Stage One to Stage Two, increasing performance from 236 hp to 241 hp and has an MSRP of $400.00.
"The kits are easy to install and conform to all GM engineering and validation standards for the Cobalt and ION," said Philippart. "And, best of all, they're backed by GM."
The Stage One and Stage Two Kits fit 2005-2006 Saturn ION Redline and Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe SS Supercharged models only, require premium fuel, and are available through all GM dealerships.

Sounds like a good idea. I finally got around to test driving an SS yesterday and in my opinion it was very weak. I mean it was nicer then my cavalier but at the 25k price tag I was expecting a little bit more. But I am glad to see GM start offering more performance parts for their compact cars.
the car is weak when new and no miles , and the fact 99% of the dealers only use 87 in them , when they require 91 or higher
Mr G , does this mean the kits are ready for purchase ??
i know alot of people have been waiting
if you guys are interested in the 2.0, you really need to read the cobaltss forums.

an extra $250 for the stage II and only getting 5 more hp over the stage I? please tell me gm is being conservative on their numbers...
Most of the gains from the Stage I come from lifting the redine, IIRC. Stage II is emphasized as delivering more power across the whole power band.
Let's say the SS/SC stock makes 150hp@2500rpm, 200hp@5000rpm, and 210hp@6300rpm (that's the redline, right?)
Stage I would make like 155hp@2500rpm, 210hp@5000rpm, and 236hp@6800rpm.
Stage II would make like 170hp@2500rpm, 225hp@5000rpm, and 241hp@6800rpm.
Exxagerated and probably not even close to the real numbers, but you get the idea.
guess we'll have to wait to see some dyno's with each stage...
i would hope there's a flatter curve with the stage II over the stage I.
still seems a bit conservative though with a smaller pulley... unless it's a VERY slightly smaller pulley.

Agreed. To me it sounds weak too. That 2.0L S/C has to work hard to get moving the 3000lbs body.

The test car I drove was a press car and it had some 23?? miles on it and it was weak too. And yes we were riding on 93 octane. By having 87octane compared to 91+octane is not significant enough to say "if it had 91 octane it would be in HO V8 territory and by using 87octane it would be in Yugo territory." I am not saying there is no loss in power, but there is, and it's so minimal the only way to notice it is, is by a stopwatch.
And yes, GM should have availability by this month.

I am not, just posting as this was new GM info.

I know that engine is pretty-sturdy from the factory (TY Saab). But I am willing to bet that GM is giving a nice little power boost in order to have logetivity of the engine. You can boost a the engine too 700HP, but lets see if it will see the end of a season for street and everyday use. Remember the LSJ is fitted in econoboxes not Grand Tourers.

to be honest, those numbers really are dissapointing. The nw WRX is supposed to have 250HP and AWD, the Caliber is 300HP and AWD, the Civic Si is 197HP NA. I was hoping the stage II would be over 250HP atleast. . .
but oh well, im gonna be getting an LSJ as soon as Pontiac releases the G5.
Mr.GoodWrench you got any info on the G5? I know the release date is supposed to be september this year, and they are going to offer an LSJ version, but what is being done to it to make it different than the Cobalt? The Pursuit sucks, and i really dont care for the Cobalts interior. I was hoping that with the Sunfire and Cavaliers, the pontiac version would have a little bit better of an interior. Any word on this?

Jayson,
Topic is here too.
As of now no LSJ (S/C) will be offered, just the 2.2L and 2.4L (L61, LE5 respectively). As for what is different... The best way I can put it is, look at the Pontiac Pursuit for looks, the only difference from the is the badge will read G5, interior trim changes (more Pontiac like i.e. red lights) and it will only come in 2-door flavor.

Sneak Preview: 2007 Pontiac G4 Coming Soon
Date posted: 02-17-2006
DETROIT — Pontiac fans will soon have their own version of the Chevrolet Cobalt SS and Saturn Ion Red Line performance cars: a sporty compact coupe, and possibly a sedan, will arrive this fall at U.S. dealerships, priced from around $20,000.
Designated "G4," the new small Pontiac fills the gap left by last year's demise of the old Sunfire. Pontiac dealers in Canada have been selling a version of the Cobalt called Pursuit, and that vehicle will provide the sheet metal and styling cues for the new G4, sources say.
The Cobalt, Ion and G4 all share the corporate Delta front-drive, small-car platform and architecture.
The G4 coupe is expected to come in a performance variant powered by the same 205-horsepower, supercharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that propels the Cobalt SS and the Ion Red Line. Pontiac also reportedly is considering installation of the even hotter 260-hp, turbocharged, 2.0-liter four from the upcoming Solstice GXP.
The arrival of the G4 as an '07 model will give Pontiac another affordable entry in the sub-$20,000 segment, joining the Vibe, with the Solstice starting at just over $20,000.
What this means to you: Another sporty Pontiac — with an attractive sticker — is in the pipeline. GM may actually be defining a brand here

also just another little question, if the G5 is going to be nothing more than a rebaged pursuit, well even in canada the pursuit is the G5, how come they are wating for the fall to release them?

Notice the bold. GM as of now has no plans to bring any F-I sub-compact to their line up.
What Edmund's article is, is more of wishful thinking then anything else. As of nobody has more info then this, GM has not released any more info then what I have provided. Anything else is just rumors. And that's not what I am here to do.
As of now, the idea to bring the 2-door G5 was to compliment the 4-door Vibe (remember the Vibe replaced the 4-door Sunfire here in the states). But oddly enough low-end Pontiacs are loosing their performance edge. 2006 will be the last year for the AWD Vibe and Vibe GT, leaving only the base Vibe.
With this being said, it is not out of this world if G5 does not come with a performance version as that is the trend for Pontiac's budget cars.
Also, by putting F-I in the G5 it would step on the toes of the G6 coupe. GM is looking for a car so that customers can enter and go up in the Pontiac family (i.e. entry-level).
As for why the fall release? Marketing and seasonal purpose. As there is nothing all-new coming for 2007 for Pontiac, here Pontiac could throw in the G5.
Also since the news was broken in Feb-06, it would be ridiculous to bring this "new" car today (April) and label it 2006 only to relabeled them 2007 from production date June forward.
Here is another marketing scheme from GM themselves, the GMT-900s (Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade), GM could have brought it out for Nov/2005 and label it 2006. But GM decided to go with Jan/2006 intro and label it 2007. All in a effort to market the vehicle as the latest.
Here is a tid-bit or useless info that you can throw at the dinner table...
If you were GM and want to promote lets say the G5 as 2008 model year, you can do that as long as you sell it at 12:01am on January 1, 2007.

i was reading over on cobaltss.net that one of the guys just bought the stage I and then an aftermarket smaller pulley (2.7 i think) and was saying it was crazy... seems like it would be the better route as you'd be able to choose your pulley size. (not just that i'm thinking they have the quick change pulley kits available for the lsj)

It also feels weak because the power is very linear... I'm used to driving my car, which has a 20 psi spike immediately on application of WOT, and makes 260 ft/lbs at 3500 rpm, but drops off pretty quickly after... The cobalt felt a little slow to me because there's no immediate punch like with a turbo, its just a very smooth, linear climb getting stronger and stronger as the revs go...
Plus, it doesn't help that dealers put in regular gas and the motors aren't really thoroughly broken in yet when new....

Do we have any confirmation on that? Because I had heard some conflicting things about the rev limiter situation with the staged upgrades... A lot of people swore that GM said it would not be raised, but at the same time, the biggest complaint with the LSJ was that it was still making power at redline and really felt like it needed at least another 500 rpm. So in my mind it would have made the most sense for an increased rev limiter to be the first mod to the software...
After several frustrating and ongoing issues with the beetle, I'm in the market for a new, or at least new to me, car.... SS is on the list....

scarab... over on cobaltss.net, i believe i read somebody hit 7000 rpm with the stage I upgrade... they were using a tech II to scan it at that time so it wasn't just going off the gm factory tach.
yeah, i'm a member over there but until just now haven't visited in a while... i'll try finding that post later when i get home from work.
