My New Supercharged Baby

Well if you didn't read my thread in the jacked/wrecked forum clicky
long story short, some arse hat pulled a hit n run on me and smashed up the cavy pretty good. I intend to get it back on the road eventually, but in the meantime I picked up a lil something to keep me on the rolling

my babies

On the bright side, now that my cavy is not a daily driver it opens up a lot of possibilities/options.

Thanks, I fell in love with the color when I saw it in some good sun. These pics do not do the color justice. But I absolutely love this thing so far, even at the stock 12.5 psi it will plant you into the seat under a good run through the gears. I'm not crazy about the spoiler, but It hasn't pissed me off enough to remove it.

It looks like GM actually underrated the crap out of the 06 engines. On cobaltss.net there are several people who have put down numbers north of 220whp on bone stock 06 SS/SC's. One even hit 232.8 And that is at the wheels. Once the stage 2 kits from GM start hitting the dynos there will be some ridiculous cobalts out there runnin near or over 300hp at the crank,, under warranty still.

What do you guys think about orange tint all the way around, would that be too much? I know I want to tint it to help with the hot seats in the summer, and I thought orange might look cool, but I havent seen many cars with orange tint, so I don't know how it would look on this color

Tint... yes.
Orange... no.

Just my opinion though. Nice choice too, by the way.

Also, I think a lot of this "underrating" really has more to do with the conditions/brand of the dyno they were done at. It's rated at...like....210hp, right? 232whp would put somewhere around 270 flywheel horsepower. Are we really expected to believe GM would underrate this car by 60hp, or close to 25%?

Anyways, nice car, have fun with it.

The cavy is smashed up right now. I got rear-ended last week at 35ish. I only had PL-PD insurance on it, and the guy pulled a hit and run. So until I catch him, the cavy isn't getting fixed very quickly.

I'd kinda rather take my time and do a full kit and some molding, than take it to a shop and drop 3-4 grand getting it back to stock. So I have it garaged for now. And now that I'm done with college though, I don't put many miles on at all, so I don't mind drivin the SS everyday.

It is rated at 205 at the crank. And as far as the "conditions/brand" of the dyno, I dare ya to step into the performance and/or boost forum(s) on here and question the type of dyno those guys are using. I do understand you're point, and that different dynos will give different results. But dyno jet is typically accepted where I'm from. Also the 05 SS/SC's have been putting down smaller numbers than 06's on the same dynos.

Not to try and start a flame war here, and I'm just going off of what I'm reading in the forums at cobaltss.net. I will likely never dyno this unless I buy one of GM's stage kits eventually, but I do know I couldn't get the mpg marked on the window if I tried, and that this car pulls like a monster.

And about the orange tint, I would probably hate it if I did, but I wouldn't mind seein it on this color just to get an idea. I probably wont get into modding the SS until I get the cavy figured out anyways, but thanks for all the comments everyone

This is going a little off topic but I dont suppose the staged upgrades would work on the 2.2L Ecotec when its S/C'ed would it? Sorry to jack the thread and possibly ask a noob question but I thought I would ask anyway.

Alex:
I don't see why they wouldn't work on the 2.2L eco SC. I doubt that GM would still warantee them, as that engine is not built like the 2.0L. But aside from that, the SC is the same unit (M62) Did anyone ever confirm if the eco kit comes with the inter-cooled manifold or not? If that kit includes the IC cores, then I would say if you plumbed everything and made it inter-cooled you might be safe with the stage kits, re-flashes might be a different story though, as I'm not sure if they'd do the cobalt stage reflash on a cavy, worth looking to though if you ask me, call your dealer.

Zcrewylui:
Once again, my cavy is smashed up right now. And I never said anything about dumping lots into it. I was just saying that since I have the cobalt to get me to work and back I can afford to have the cavy down for a while to do a few things I've always wanted to (pwr locks/windows, kit, etc),

I haven't had an opportunity to even get an estimate or to find out how bad the uni-body is twisted from the accident. I got rear-ended so hard it created a 1" gap on the opposite front headlight/bumper. I am personally not knowledgeable enough in unibody repair to know how much structural damage occured. So the cavy will not be going anywhere until those things are figured out. SInce it was a hit and run and my dumbass only had PLPD insurance I hafta pay for the repairs unless I can find the guy who hit me. But I still need to go from A to B everyday so I picked up the Cobalt because I like it.

And instead of dropping $3000 or more at a body shop to make the cavy look stock I'd rather pay a shop to do the chassis straightening, and then take my time with the body work myself. It would be cheaper for me to kit it myself, than pay a shop to do OEM parts. None of those things mean that the cavy won't be me daily driver again. But since I own my cavy clear and free, I wouldn't even consider doing more damage to it by driving it "as is".

When I said "since the cavy isn't my daily driver anymore" I think a few of you may have read too much into that. And maybe I should have choose my words more wisely. But at the moment the cavy's future is uncertain at best. I hope that explains the situation a little better.

Ylime,
Yeah I will never go without full coverage again. I guess I had to learn that one the hard way. I had the cavy paid off and made a dumb decision to drop it to PLPD until I graduated. The kick in the balls was that I was going to return it to full coverage in a little over month when the policy expired. Oh well live and learn.

But I only live like 10 miles from work, and I 'm an engineer at an aerospace company, so I park next to brand new BMW's, Acuras, and Saabs for the most part. So even though I'll be driving the SS every day she will always be parked in a safe secure parking lot. And like I said I hardly put on any miles at all now that I don't hafta drive back and forth to school (~100 miles each way) anymore

03eco, have you talked to your insurance company or read your terms? Lots of PLPD will cover un-insured and under-insured motorist. A hit and run will sometimes be the same as the guy having no insurance. If thats the case you may get it paid for. Probably not but it seems worth looking into to me.

Re: My New Supercharged Baby

Rabbit, I will definitely call up my insurance and check to see if they have any provisions for this sort of situation. Most of what I have been hearing is that with Michigan's No Fault laws I am basically screwed, unless I can catch the guy who hit me and go after him for medical and such. But if you didn't read the thread about the wreck, I may actually get lucky and find the guy, I did my own investigation and came up with a strong lead and solid evidence. Keeping my fingers crossed and hopes up though. Thanks for the suggestion .

I hear ya, I didn't read the thread. If the guy ran more than likely he didn't have insurance. So you better hope you can still get something. I mean you can sue but if he's poor what do you sue him for? You can't take money someone doesn't have.

If you are interested in selling the cav let me know ( BlackRabbitZ28@gmail.com ) I will be back home in a few months and would be willing to make the extra little drive to pick the car up. I have cash in hand so if you wish to sell it let me know and give me a price with some pictures.

Staying on topic though, sweet ride. The Cobalt SS grows more and more on me everyday. I need to get down to test drive one. BTW, stay away from colored tint. Its horrible I'm sorry. Black tint would look sweet though.

After I get an estimate, or at least get it to a shop to find out how much structural damage was done I'll know if I wanna keep her and do it myself or not. I couldn't feel right about selling it to anyone though until I knew exactly what was done to the unibody itself. I just haven't had any time lately to go and get an estimate between work, medical crap and dealing with the cops. But if you wanted to see more pics of the cavy, I have a thread goin in Interior for a bunch of CF stuff I just installed. It all showed up right after the accident, so I said screw it, I wanted to see it installed, lol.

I guess I've been more concerned about trying to find that guy than anything else. Even if I never recover a cent from this I think that guy should go down for this crap. I mean he slammed into me in to me that fast in front of a school at 7:30ish am. The guy could have just as easily hit a kid crossing the street.

Be careful with the test drive, I was hooked after mine. Just had to taker he home with me And about the tint, I agree orange would look terrible, I guess the paint got to my head that day, lol.

Thanks, the only other color that I liked on the cobalt was white, but GM didn't make any white SS/SC's
