ok......my buddy has a 99 Grand Prix GT. Heres the background. He has headers, full exhaust with no cat, and intake. He has a CEL on for some time now. He went to get it inspected yesterday(NY state) and they told him the code said his mass airflow sensor needs to be replaced. Is this right? I dont think they know what they are talking about. It would seem to me it is because of the missing O2 sensor from the cat. he never got a O2 simulator, so wouldnt this be the problem? not the mass airflow sensor?
he needs to have it pass inspection, but i dont want him to go replace the airflow sensor if it really is the O2 sensor.
what do you guys think?? am i correct in assuming he just needs the O2 sim to get rid of the CEL?
thanks in advance
apparently the code he is throwing is PO102 which is "MAF or VAF circuit low input" which i found thru a google search.
mass air flow sensors do go bad..... If i remember correctly, the 3.8 has a hot wire type MAF sensor, and if that wire gets broken or goes bad, then yeah, it will through a code.
^^^thanks for the reply Meck! so would just replacing the MAF sensor cure it, or will it require doing new wiring?
thanks
the wire im talking about is inside the throttle body, if you look inside it, the wire is right in the center, im guessing if its broke, you have to replace that whole unit. I have one back home and i can send you a pic tomorrow night if you want
also, im speaking for the supercharged 3.8, I'm not sure if the unit is different on the n/a 3.8
got clubgp.com more and alot of experienced GP ethusiasts there
Meck - if you could graqb a pic for me, that would be awesome
fst - ive actually been there looking also, but i dont wanna register to ask, and i couldnt find anytyhing in a search there
... why dont you pull the MAF out? it's two bolts on the top of the TB. pull it out, see if the wire is broken. if it is, replace, if not, clean it. you can either use injector cleaner in a shot glass, or electronics cleaner. a fine spray of cleaner from about a foot away, so it doesnt actually have much force when it hits the wires. once you clean it, clear the code and drive around for a while. odds are if he's runing catless and doesnt have a sim, then he's actually throwing two codes.
Andy
it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.
