new GTI?
Sunday, March 19, 2006 5:04 PM
I drove the new GTI today, the gear set up is annoying but the car seems fun to drive even if the styling is hard to like and the price is very high for that class of cars.............what does everyone else think of it?

You mean the DSG transmission? Other than that the GTI is a solid car. Powerful, handles well, and far classier than a J-body.

I was happy when I heard my car ran 10s. Then I found out that was 0-60.

I am talking about the 6-spd..........its jsut that VW puts reverse on the left by 1st..........instead of on the bottom right........this somehow messed me up and led to a few starts in 3rd until I got used to it. .....also, getting the clutch to engage is a lot trickier then a honda or even a cobalt, but once the car is going, it shifts smoothly

u are supposed to have to push down to get it into reverse. its a lockout feature mayube you are pressing down on the shifter.

The reverse on the left is a euro thing, you have to push down on the shifter to engage reverse. Not a big deal really...

i got the dsg in mine. I've never even driven a manual one.

the price might seem high if you group it with cars like the civic and cobalt....but its not really in that group. Its closer to an A3 than anything else; and when you compare it to that car, it doesnt seem all that expensive anymore.

^^^ the new GTI IS an A3

if your really considering buying one if your gonna leave it stock go with the DSG trans, if you want to mod it the only way to go is the manual... the DSG is a blast to drive but its a really really weak trans, if you chip the car and do nothing else your preaty much maxing out a DSG trans I'd have to look it up for the exact figure but the max torque the trans can handle is 250-260 ft/lbs. Another tech at wotrk bought a GTI with a manul trans, he chiped it and thats it and dynod 220ish whp and 250+ tq (btw the chip alone gained him right about 50 whp and 50 wtq, he did get base line numbers before hand)

It was the GIAC chip and 258 ft/lbs of torque is the Dsg transmissions max

Do they sell the new GTI with the rims they show on the commercials? the five spoke ones with the giant circle shapes between each spoke ? those are hot .. and i think they are the same ones that were on the car when it was shown as a concept in the auto shows.. but on the VW site it onle shows some ugly 16 spoke rims or something like that..

Well i am on my spring break down here in Agusta, GA and for @!#$ and giggles one day me and my ex g/f i am staying with went test driving Cars. This car was one of them that we got to test drive. Gerald Jones VW here had 2 of the new MKV 5 GTI and 2 regular old body style GTI's. I test drove both, one with the 6speed manual and the paddle shift DSG auto. My over all view on the body styling of the car i gave it a 9 because for being " pre-tuned" i think there was still too much wheel gap, but thats just me. My cav is on the prokit and sits lower i think. But everything else had me sold on the car. The Manual they had it stickered at $26,498 and the auto with DSG was $27,???. We test drove the auto first since the manual was in the inside showroom. For an auto car, i could not believe how much fun the DSG was to shift and play around with. Makes you kinda feel like your in an Indy car playing around and the car never came out of boost like it did with the manual. I wish my auto cav has this function. The manual version of the car was a little hard to get use to since they told me it had a hydrolic clutch and felt like i wasn't even pushing on the damn clutch at all. But once around the lot and i got her down. Both cars were quick as hell and the 100mph mark came up pretty fast. Only thing i wasn't impressed was when trying to slow down from 100 the brakes had some vibration in both cars.. i don't know if that was a fluke, but kinda worried me. Both cars put you back in the seat i felt around 3,500-4K rpms. Before we test drove this car, we came from the dodge dealership and was test driving the SRT-4... Hands down the new GTI's on this one. Being the new GTI's have more torque you can really feel it. But in the back of my mind, i could remember what darkstars was saying about VW and their problems, which hesitates me on thinkin about buying one of these.
