i really dont know much about audi at ALL

but love the way the a4's look.

and my sunfire feels like it is going to fall apart and im just sick of it. id love to just buy a new car but in college and strapped for cash.

anyways, there is a couple 97 a4's around me that look real clean for 5-6k

both have a bit over 100k miles on them with the 1.8t 5speed auto

are these reliable cars? my sunfire has 95k on it right now and i want to move on to something that will last a while. do a4's make it into high or mid 100's easily without alot of money? or would my fire end up lasting longer?

thanx guys

Well, I'm no expert and I've never owned one, let me get that out from the beginning.

Audis, as with most "high end" cars tend to have electrical problems, especially with age. And especially since it's just an upgraded VW (known for electrical problems). I have no idea about the longevity of 1.8T engines, talk to darkstars about that for a mechanic's opinion, as well as for everything else. All in all, I'd wager it would have decent reliability (probably not too much better than your Sunfire). If you're looking for a good, reliable car, go import. You could get a used loaded Accord, Camry, or even a Lexus or other nice car for that price range, and I'd trust any of them way more than an A4. JMHO

My gf's best friend has an 01 A4, and while a beautiful car, has has a @!#$LOAD of problems with it. Seems like every couple weeks something is wrong, and it is hella expensive to get fixed.

My friend has a '97. He picked it up for around the same price you have been finding them around your area. As far has I know so far, he has been having little problems with it. The only electrical problem was that he keyless entry was going on the fritz from time to time. Other than that, he needs to replace his rear brakes and the clutch sometimes sticks to the floor and doesn't come back up.

The car has around 115,000 miles on it and it is a 1.8t too.

Have a good one,
Justin

i am an audi tech...make sure that its had its 90,000 mile service done. timing belt, water pump, thermostat and rollers, tensioners and everything. also if they have dealer reciepts that is a plus. they REQUIRE synthetic oil, if it hasnt, they suffer from oil sludge problems which will cause the low oil pressure light to come on. then ur screwed. If you need any more info on them, u can email me or IM me on aim, Playdohizsalty is my SN. be advised that if you go to test drive the car, that its not a speed machine, i think they are very very slow off the line. if its a manual trans it makes it a little easier. also get used to check engine lights for mass air flow sensors, lean conditions due to broken vacuum lines. Like i said, if you need to know any more, just shoot me a email or IM.
Have a good one.
Matt
