This was my dad's car, and I inherited it when he passed away. I don't drive it much, mostly when I take my mother to the doctor or shopping or whatever (she hasn't driven in over 40 years). I noticed last fall the A/C wasn't blowing cold air and I couldn't get it to switch between vents. The other day I was driving it and I noticed that now the heater doesn't blow hot air. I figured maybe the A/C just needed recharged and the vents needed cleaned out, so I took the car in to have a mechanic check it out, he said the A/C was low so he charged it up, but the vent problem would need a bit more time and he said it would be a not so cheap fix. He thinks the motor or solenoids or whatever probably needs replaced. Anyway, I was wondering if this is a common issue or if it's because the car sits in the garage so damn much. And how difficult are these cars to work on? It's got the push-button a/c controls and I know next to nothing about them. As far as the heater not putting out heat, the blower works, and I checked the heater core and coolant level, and all of that seems okay.

Normally if the fan works but no heat = a bad thermostat .Unless the heater core is leaking normally the thermostat is stuck and basically u just need to replace that part. And that being a good possibility the antifreeze should be changed and check the hoses for wear being over 4 yrs old while they may show no signs of wear it's a good idea to replace them.I replace by hoses every 4yrs and that's a maintenance rule by most auto shops or hose company recomm and I have had them last alot longer but,it never hurts to do it anyway.I hope this helps being if the fan motor works but the heat does not is normally the first thing to change being the car is 8yrs old.
I was leaning towards that as a possibility, but the engine wasn't overheating when I drove it so it wasn't at the top of the list. I'll check it out, tho. I'm really thinking the car's biggest issue is the simple fact I never drive it. I mean, eight years old and it still only has 60K miles on the odometer.

My 93 LeSabre did the same thing. It would randomly switch between vents/defrosters, and even so, it wouldn't blow that cold of air, even after i had it charged. I was told it was a bad module that was causing it and that it would be over 100 to fix, so I was said screw it, lol
