Hey guys,
I am going to be thinking about a new car come this summer and I was just wondering if anyone has any opinions on this...
http://www.suzukiauto.com/sr_06/grand_vitara/
A friend of mine in highschool had one (the old style, not one like this) and the quality wasnt that good. However I really want one of the smaller suv's and this for me seems like the best option. I really wanted a brand new rav 4 but they made those just a bit too big, thus putting them just out of my price range. I just went this past weekend to the pittsburgh auto show and saw this and I am truely impressed. Cars these days are just going out of sight price wise and being that im only a sophomore in college i want something nice, but cant afford a crazy car payment. I need something dependable and, since i am very active outdoors (skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, driving on the beach, etc etc etc) i am looking mostly for a small suv such as this. I looked at civics, cobalts and other things of the sort, gas mileage is GREAT but i just love the extra space ill have with this type of vehicle. I never was a fan of suzuki vehicles but after seeing this i am beginning to change my opinion. I just wanted to knwo if anyone has any personal experience that could help me make my decision.
Thanks
Harrison
P.S. I really cant break 20 g's so please dont flame me for wanting a suzuki
you can get an escape for around 20 grand
but it would be the 4 banger
torrent is also just about 20 grand
could also get an HHR which is kinda like a smallish suv
or get a chevy uplander (lowest trim possible) for around 20 grand
base model rav 4 is 20 grand
same with the cr-v
so there are lots of options
as for the vitara, i havent been in one so i really cant help you there
but there are lots of small suv options for around 20 grand
Go with the new SI. My buddy just picked one up for $19,985.

rather have an Xterra. Sorry but that thing just looks ugly to me.
Buy on only if you like spending a lot of time in the service waiting room. My mom had the V6 and it was the worst vehicle that she ever owned, and she had an omni and a fiesta. Blown head gasket, replaced differential, cracked manifold, ball joints, fog lights broke, coating peeled off rims... and more that i can't remember all before 56,000 miles.
Not to mention the dealership was the biggest bunch of crooks ever. They sold her an extended warranty and then when the head gasket went they claimed it was the consequence of a broken hose and the warranty didn't cover "consequential effects".
DO NOT BUY. I would like to see Suzuki go broke.
My grandmother has the 4-banger, and it has treated her much better. So if you do buy one, avoid the V6.

I'm not sure what they run, but a Subie wagon would do ya pretty good, no?
The new Grand Vitara is based on the theta same as the vue, equanox etc..
it is not your 'mom's' suzuki!
I like the forenza wagen myself.

Yeah my aunt, who is a real outdoors enthusiast, has one. She lives in Nevada and goes skiing, hiking, biking, and climbing. Her subaru wagon hasn't broke down yet. She also drives it to work everyday.
My sister works for a Suzuki dealership and after I saw this post, I swung by and checked it out. Me and the boyfriend liked it, so if I dont get the Pontiac Torrent, then this is a strong second.
Honestly i thought they were S$!T too, but i was so impressed with them at the car show. Xteras are too much, i love the new si but they markups on them right now are rediculus, not to mention my insurance as a 20 year old is outrageous (my mom has a brand new car and my dad drives an escalade but its a piece of crap and we are getting rid of it so there will be 2 new cars). I really like the smaller suv's but they have gotten so expensive, this really the only thing in my range and i actually do like it. I love subaru's but i dont like the wagons at all. I still want a new rav 4 the most but the made them bigger and increased the price to go with it....oh well.... we will se what happenes this summer. Im still just looking and getting opinions and stuff, so thanks to all that responded

This is on the same platform as the chevy equinox and pontiac torrent. IMO the pontiac is the best looking and nicest inside of the 3. The Equinox is also pretty nice for the money... but looks less like an SUV. I would probably go with chevy or Poniac.. just for resale, even though they are the same underneath.

Incorrect. This SUV is not based on GM Theta platform. This is Suzuki's own.

kinda not....
The Suzuki Grand Vitara was developed independently by many of the same Suzuki engineers. Although it uses some Theta componentry, especially in the suspension, it is quite different and should not be considered a Theta vehicle. Notably, it uses a longitudinal engine and is rear wheel drive with a 103.9 in (2639 mm) wheelbase, while all other Theta vehicles are transverse engined with front wheel drive as the default. All can also be ordered with all wheel drive as well, however. The forthcoming Suzuki XL7 will be a true Theta vehicle, and will be built alongside the Equinox and Torrent at CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada.

Maybe an older one but not the newer ones. My sister works for a Suzuki and Jeep dealership and says that the only service calls they get now are for oil changes and milage maintenance. That the Jeeps get are 10x more problematic than the Suzukis.
Like I said, I may seriously consider getting one of the 06+ Grand Vitaras when I am in the market for a new vehicle.

Like I said it is not a Theta platform, especially when all Grand Vitara models feature a new lightweight, yet rigid unibody featuring a welded-in ladder frame. Theta is whole unibody with no ladder frame. This is a Suzuki design. And wikipedia did screwed up on the suspension componentry comment.
Now the XL7 which was not touched on will be here by mid-2007, Suzuki will replaces the XL-7 with a bigger five- and seven-passenger SUV designed for North America. Based on the 2005 Concept X Detroit show car, it will use the Saturn Vue's Theta platform. A 3.6-liter Japanese-built V-6 based on GM's high-feature engines will power the 192-inch-long truck.

i just don't like suzuki. i feel more comfortable driving a toyota. call me bullheaded(because you'd be right
), but i wouldn't go near a suzuki.
besides, the old suzuki commercials with that dude used to creep me out.
My suzuki swift, was the most reliable car I've ever owned. Suzuki Samuri's and SideKicks take one hell of a beating too. We never saw those in the shop.
