i found a 99 grand am se 3400 v6 4 dr at a good price. i took it for a test drive and the abs light is on, the low trac is on, and the tire presser light is on as well. it has 212,000 on the clock.she has just replaced the tranny, she wants 5,000 cdn. is this a good deal? and is there known probs to watch out for.?

maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow....... but some day
I had a 99 GAGT. I had it for a year and got tired of fixing it. It left me stranded a couple of times at a store. The security system that disables starting when the key is not used was malfunctioning and would not let me start the car. LIM gaskets have and will fail causing you to lose coolant, there is no way around that it will happen. Cruise control took a dump a week after i bought it.
So you want to but a car with no ABS, no traction control, and indicator lights lighting up the cluster? Tell her good luck selling it and go find yourself a better car. Good luck.
Yeah sounds like a lot of problems and a lot of miles (kilometers?)
Rob
Sold 2/2/05
That price is quite high for a 99, especially for those KM's, and the problems. You should have no problem finding another Grand Am SE in better condition, with better Km's.
she was asking 7,000. thats what there selling for up here with thoses km. remember its cdn funds. what is a LIM gaskets? thank you for your help. i am actually looking for a j for my sister around 4-5 thousand. she has a 87 tempo that has 400,000 +.it has bad blow by, she gets a buzz whenever she drives it b/c it comes in the car.

maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow....... but some day
Lower Intake Manifold Gaskets. With the 3400, that's the major repair expense, and it's about an 8hr job to replace.
for 212,000, I'd crank her down to under $4000, or walk.
Also, the trac control, tire, and ABS lights tripping is usually either the speed sensor (which may require a new bearing, the wire connecting it to the speedsensor, or possibly the ABS computer, it's $300, $200, and about $1000 respectively for the repairs).
If you want to get the car, I'd suggest taking it to a mechanic and paying the $50-75 to get the information on what is needed.
On top of that, I'd get the repair estimate, and make a copy of everything, and give the seller the copy. No damned way I'd pay $7000 unless EVERYTHING is fixed, and there is not a single solitary leak on the engine, even @ $5000 you're paying too much.
IIWY, I'd get myself to an auction, and make liberal use of the Canadian Black Book site (go to GMCanada.com or toyota.ca and go to the appraise your vehicle links).

with all those lights on, it could have been in a major accident too, and hacked back together, then asking 7G's off the bat and going down 2G's sounds like she may be trying to cover the repair costs...
run the VIN for a lemon check...
sounds like you are trying to buy somone else's problem to me, I would keep looking...

I suggest you don't buy it. I had a 00 GA GT and didn't like it at all. Appearance wise it was nice but mechanically it was not so nice. I would get the Grand Am with the 2.4 in it. Or a cavalier with a 2.4 or ecotec.
titus: what did you have problems with? I've had 4 and I was happy with all of them overall (except for the damned brakes... GRRR!), and never really had a lot of problems (other than the brakes, ARGH!!!) with any of them.
DAMN BRAKES!!!!
By comparison, I had a butt load of troubles with my Sunfire (door rattled incessantly, e-brake cable or something snapped, trunk lock siezed, both door locks seized, clutch burnt out after 3500 kms, air bags deployed 3x without cause). I guess it's hit or miss, but I was sick of the hassles... I got the GA SE, and basically went on cruise for 3 years with scheduled maintenance (AND 3 F***ING SETS OF BRAKES!!!)

in the province i live in you cant do that Saskatchewan government insurance (sgi) discloses everything. the only way you know if it was a total loss is if there is a yellow sticker in the door jam, which could also mean an out of province car(its been saftied).

yeah thats way too much for it...i have a 99 olds alero ..pretty much the same car id had 98 on the clock and i paid $4g...the low tire pressure could just mean one of the tires is within 5psi diffrence....i hate the traction controll system, i hope to never have another car with it again (mostly cause i hate the damn light)

wow around here that car would be worth $3000 approx. im in ontario so its probally way to much, the KMS are pretty high and the warning light being lit up are a bad sign. it tells me that the car was not well mantained during its life.
good luck, id pass on it. for $5g you could get a much nicer GA

ontario is different than sask.. sask cars seem to always be priced higher, i think a lot of it has to do with salt being used on the roads. In sask, we use very minimal salt compared to Ontario. I donno I could see it being lower do to that reason. I would NEVER buy a car that was in ontario. IMO

they use insane amounts of salt here. in a 30km drive to work on the highway my blue car turns WHITE from the salt.
cars don't last here like you said due to the salt.

its not that i dont like your car is sweet, its that the car is for my sister. she wont need a stage 2 clutch and all those mods. if it was a z i deff would think about it and swap some parts on my car

. i really like the color of the car. how many km on her? and your buddy with the g/a is it a 2dr or 4? 4 or 6?
they lady called today and said it was the tires, which is exactly what we thought was the problem. she put on 4. we will have to check it again. maybe take the price down.
still hping on a j. i will get back to you.

maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow....... but some day
my buddy's is a 2 door i belive, but mine has 186,xxxkms and still runnin strong...
the clutch isn't different from stock, just grabs faster.. and as for the rest of the parts, like the springs, wheels, breaks and stuff you could easily swap on your car.
think about it, buy a car for your sis, and mod yours
