to turbo or not to turbo
Thursday, January 12, 2006 4:42 PM
now i know everyone here is partial to Js but i just picked up a miata 5 speed with the 1.6l. now stock its slower by like 20 wheel hp. but it is rwd. the question is should i turbo the z24 or the miata. i have everything that i need to install the turbo onto the cav. the reasons for and against both are (atleast imo)
miata against
-91 m special edition. #464 of 4000
-126000 miles on the motor
-less stock hp
-weaker clutch than the cav and will need to be replaced and i dont want a stiff clutch.
-super nice condition
miata for
-its slow
-rwd
-positive traction
-ighter than the cav
stronger botton end.
cav against.
-none really except its fwd
cav for
-all the good suspension parts and brakes
-more hp than the miata
-have all the parts including injectors and all the cav only stuff that id have to buy for the miata
-80000 miles
-lsd

i think thats about all. thanks for any advice in helping me make my decision.

Honestly if it was me I would Do the Miata. For a number of reasons.
1. They can be built for boost, and the engine will overall put out more hp.
2. Its RWD better launching, and more fun to drive.
3. I have see MANY of them in the 12s. and lower. J bodys there is only a few.
4. Better after market support for the car. Better systems for tuning, and less custom work.
5. Drifting and or better handling. You don't want a poor handling high hp car.

I would just keep the cav to move people and make it a grocery getter.

PS This is all coming from a fellow Boosted JBody owner.

do the cav, you have all the parts.if you have to resell the parts you wont brake even.the cav looks better(less of a chick car than the miata) and you start with more hp and you have lsd. IMO no doubt about it........cav.

maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow....... but some day

Miata.

You can build it up a lot more, and have a roll cage without pretense.

MIATA for the win!!!!

I am actually getting that as my nexzt car purchase for AutoX maybe a lil drifting and road course action. Plus they have a way better aftermarket and are in the Demigod realm of AutoX.

Turbo the miata!

I don't need no stinking SIG. Wait this is one.
DOH!

You know there is a place in Texas that will stuff a ford 5.0 v8 in a miata? its a reasonable price, but to answer your question..... turbo the miata.

I've seen boosted Miatas and they haul butt in a big way. I've only seen one boosted cav in my area, and that Supercharger sounded great but it was not what I would call a fast car at all. Granted turbo apps in small displacement engines tend to do better than supers, but still. The Miata has more going for it, and as you can see, all the votes.

Fear not the RWD.. Just go to an empty parking lot and learn how to throw it around. I think you'll find it easier and more fun that FWD by a long shot.. For one, they don't push (oversteer) as much, to me, that's worth it right there.

simple rule of RWD vs FWD

easier to lose control in rwd, but easier to regain it

Choose the Miata. As many said, the engine is a better engine overall, and will support boost and higher HP levels much better. My big concern would be with a car so small, light, and topless, whether you'd want some sort of rollbar?

Sounds like the Miata needs work, though. 126k miles doesnt necessarily mean a trashed engine. My friend's 96 Civic has 10k more miles than my 98 Cavalier and mine leaks oil while his is fine. On the other hand that's apples and oranges, Chevy/Honda but still...

My vote? Run over the Miata's engine, replace things like belts, hoses, maybe the camshaft(s), the clutch, etc, then blow it. A turbo Miata is sweet. A turbo Cavalier is... well... just a very fast Cavalier.

Sell the Cav, rebuild engine in miata and turbo it. Sure youll loose alot of money but itll be way awesome.
